LOUISVILLE, Kentucky: Nine Amish men have received jail sentences for failing to comply with a state law requiring them to display bright orange safety triangles on their horse-drawn buggies. The jail sentences, which are the result of unpaid fines and court costs, range from three to 10 days.[1] The men, who belong to an Amish sect known as the Old Order Swartzentruber, adhere to religious beliefs which forbid them from wearing bright colors. Judge Deborah Hawkins Crooks handed down the sentence after the Kentucky Court of Appeals denied the defendants' appeal in June. The [[Wikipedia: American Civil Liberties Union|American Civil Liberties Union]] has appealed the case to the Kentucky Supreme Court.[2]
