An effort in Washington, D.C., to recall City Councilman Kenyan McDuffie from his position was launched in June 2016. The Committee to Preserve Ward 5 submitted petition language to the D.C. Board of Elections.[1] As of December 2016, this recall effort appeared to be abandoned and Ballotpedia discontinued active coverage. Recall supporters
William Hunt, the committee's treasurer, told Washington City Paper that McDuffie faltered in serving Ward 5 constituents. Hunt stated that ward residents were upset over McDuffie's support for commercial development of the McMillan Reservoir and locating a homeless shelter on Rhode Island Avenue.[1][2]
Path to the ballot
The D.C. Board of Elections must approve recall language before signatures are gathered for a special election. If approved, the Committee to Preserve Ward 5 would have needed to gather approximately 6,000 signatures, which totaled 10 percent of the registered voters in Ward 5 in July 2016.[1]
