Kevin Chavous is an education activist and the owner and founder of the Chavous Group.[1]
During the period of transition between the Obama and Trump administrations, Chavous was reported to be in consideration for a high-level appointment in the Trump administration. The Washington Post reported that Chavous was being considered for secretary of education.[2]
Career
Education
Chavous earned a bachelor's degree in political science and government from Wabash College and a law degree from Howard University School of Law.[3]
Legal career
Chavous worked as a personal injury lawyer with the Washington, D.C. firm of Cadeaux and Tagliere before pursing public office.[4] From 2002 to 2012, Chavous was employed by Denton's, then known as SNR Denton, a global law firm.[1]
Political career
A Democrat, Chavous was elected in 1992 to the first of his three terms on the District of Columbia Council. He served from 1993 to 2005.[1] During his time on the council, Chavous served in a number of roles, including as a member of the following committees.[5]

- Judiciary Committee
- Committee on Self-Determination
- Committee on Labor
During Chavous' tenure as chair of the Committee on Education, Libraries and Recreation, he helped bring charter schools to Washington, D.C.[2] He remains an advocate of school choice and voucher programs, saying in 2015, "Every day, too many children are trapped in a school that does not work for their needs, but school choice empowers parents and provides needed alternatives for millions of children nationwide."[6]
Chavous ran for mayor of Washington, D.C. in 1998 but was defeated by Anthony Williams in the Democratic primary.[7]
Chavous lost re-election to the council in 2004.[8]
In 2008, Chavous served on the education policy committee for Barack Obama's presidential campaign.[9]
