Kevin Cooney is a longtime anchor for KCCI-TV in Des Moines, Iowa. He has anchored the news since 1982 and announced his retirement in May 2015. Cooney was a co-panelist for the November 14, 2015, Democratic debate on CBS.[1]

Career

Kevin Cooney has worked for KCCI-TV since 1972, when he was a sports reporter, and began in the news department in 1974. He has won a number of journalism awards, including Jack Shelley Award from the Iowa Broadcast News Association and the James Schwartz Award for Distinguished Service to Journalism from Iowa State University.[2] Upon Cooney's retirement announcement in 2015, The Des Moines Register noted the anchor's appeal throughout the state of Iowa: "KCCI was consistently the local TV evening news ratings leader in Des Moines during Cooney's tenure. In polls and surveys by local media, viewers often named him as their favorite anchor. It was his reporting chops and smarts that gained viewer trust, his colleagues said."[3]

Kevin Cooney was a co-panelist—along with John Dickerson, Nancy Cordes and Kathie Obradovich—for the November 14, 2015, Democratic debate on CBS.[4] Cooney and Obradovich previously moderated the debate between Joni Ernst (R) and Bruce Braley (D) during the 2014 race for the U.S. Senate in Iowa.[5]
