I’m a 17-year resident of Shaker’s Ludlow neighborhood. My wife grew up here, and she and my son are Shaker alums. Through long experience serving roles across non-profits, advisory committees, and city appointments like my work on Shaker’s City Planning Commission, I’ve learned to successfully work in board and government structures. My endorsements from Shaker’s mayor, council members, and other public officials are the result of my track record in diligent, community-centered, and creative public service. I have proven experience collaboratively getting results for kids. At the Ludlow Pre-K, I organized my neighbors to advocate for a project approach that better met the needs of our community kids and residents in addition to preschoolers. That resulted in a greener site, a larger playground, and funding from the City and Shaker Schools Foundation to make it happen.
  • Keeping our school facilities investment on track: These projects are the largest public investment in the city in our lifetimes, and if the high school becomes a future phase it will be well over $300 million dollars. Our schools touch nearly every neighborhood as well as our kids, it’s critical to get them right.
  • Great education for every student: Shaker is built on providing a high quality and holistic education to every one of our diverse residents, and we can’t fall short – we have to support and challenge every student from every background so that Shaker remains a community of choice.
  • Community engagement: Our decisions are better when the people impacted are involved in creating the solutions. My priority will be to broaden input from those who have a stake in the success of the schools: certainly kids, parents, and teachers; but we should truly be leveraging the experiences and wisdom of our entire community.
Collaboration: Our schools and our city depend on each other’s strength for their success. There are tremendous opportunities to work together on issues that affect both. We can focus on supporting youth by working together on supports and opportunities outside the school walls, we can provide better recreation for the community by sharing facilities and developing joint management and programming, and we need to make decisions together about taxes to reduce the burdens on residents where we can without compromising the quality of education or our civic life.
It's time for an updated strategic planning effort that engages the community. Five years ago we made the bold choice to detrack/delevel many classrooms. It's the number one issue I hear questions about from the community.

It's time to take stock of where we are: what's working, what's currently falling short, and where we need to make adjustments and if necessary shift resources to be sure education is supporting and challenging every student.

I live down the street from the new Ludlow Early Learning Center. As that project was being developed, I could see there were missed opportunities to better serve both preschoolers and the community.

I organized my neighbors to advocate for a project approach that better met the needs of our community kids and residents in addition to preschoolers. That resulted in a greener site, a playground doubled in size, and funding from the City and Shaker Schools Foundation to make it happen.
