I am a common sense problem-solver. I’ve spent my life working with people in this region of Maine, to improve lives through education and community businesses. I want to help do so through increased economic growth and through increased medical, health and broadband options. I was educated in Maine, K-18 (Bachelors in English, Masters in Educational Leadership). I stayed in the region because I love the woods and waters and I met my wife here. I had the wonderful opportunity to stay and work here with her at Lee Academy, a school which has served local students and students from the Tribes of Maine, from China and southeast Asia, the mideast, sub-saharan Africa, Mexico and Latin America, and from eastern Europe. Teaching these students and training their teachers were “dream jobs” for me. I love kayaking, canoeing, hiking, snowshoeing and working with wood – firewood, building cabins and gorgeous (!) outhouses … Married since 1984 to wife Kendra, I have 3 children and 4 grandchildren. For 16 years, I co-owned the Springfield Fairgrounds and coordinated its physical rejuvenation and reconstruction. I wrote (with many teachers) curriculum for nascent American schools in China and South Korea, and I've been lucky to visit both countries, several times. I love to read and write, mill lumber in my small sawmill, split firewood, try new restaurants, and hike anywhere in Maine.
  • I'm committed to improving economic, health and educational opportunities for people in our region.
  • I am fair-minded, honest and direct, and an effective problem-solver.
  • Maine needs to build on its pragmatism and ability to compromise and find common ground on issues; I support and want to contribute to that effort.
1) Forest and nature management and use, 2) affordable, available, quality healthcare, 3) internet-based job opportunities, 4) education, of all kinds, 5) police support and advocacy.
Work ethic, fairness, honesty, intelligent problem-solving, open-mindedness, moral compass.
Persistence, willingness to both listen and ask questions, honesty, ability to solve problems and find answers, the love of meaningful work.
To listen, learn and translate the needs of constituents into both: 1) effective policy and 2) individual help and support.
My "first job" was a series of jobs that taught me how to be an effective and productive employee: I began working in 5th grade doing odd jobs for neighbors, had a 45-person paper route for the Bangor Daily News in 8th grade, worked in high school in potato fields and potato houses, a local IGA, and then in the mills of the Sherman Lumber Company while attending college -- also working part-time for for a small carnival operator, making and selling cotton candy at various events.
"The Lord of the Rings", JRR Tolkien. This book was an inspiration to dream and take risks, early in my life.
Climate-supporting job creation, bridging the urban-rural political divide in our state, affordable and quality healthcare, increased access to relevant post-secondary education.
Natural Resources or Forestry, Education, Health & Insurance, Criminal justice, Economic Development, others
Any words spoken by John Oliver!
I absolutely do. Ideological rigidity has no place in making society better. Compromise and creativity are needed to solve real-world problems.
