Smith was seeking the Republican nomination for Governor of New Hampshire in the 2012 elections. The primary election was held on September 11, 2012 and the general election is scheduled for November 6, 2012. Smith was defeated by Ovide Lamontagne in the Republican primary on Setpember 11, 2012.[5]

When asked why he was running, Smith stated, "As Governor, I have a practical, but bold plan to bring more high-paying and sustainable jobs to the state, spur economic development, reduce our high health care and energy costs, and retain more of our young workers after they finish school by creating more job opportunities for them here in our own state. I have the vision, energy, and experience to see this plan through and will work with all of our citizens to lead our state into a new era of prosperity, and make New Hampshire into the envy of the nation."[6]
