Campaign themes

2015

Strickland's website highlighted the following campaign themes:[3]

Reconnecting communities to local government

  • Excerpt: "There are many organizations and institutions across our city that provide valuable humanitarian services for the people of Philadelphia. Whether it is an organization that provides mentoring for at-risk youth, job training, or food for families in need, they all contribute to the betterment of our community. In addition, our houses of worship and faith-based institutions help to meet the psychological and spiritual needs of many. These are the organizations that truly know the needs of our community and how to best meet them. Our local government owes a debt of gratitude to these organizations and should build partnerships in order to gain insight and provide support and resources."

Strengthening our schools

  • Excerpt: "Our teachers are being asked to do more with less and many of our students are underperforming. This is unfair to our teachers and our students. It will take a combination of approaches in order to properly address the problems in our public schools. … We must ensure our public schools are properly funded. However, a major part of ensuring our schools are properly funded is the wise use of the resources being provided."

Job growth and economic opportunity

  • Excerpt: "Not only must we increase the rate of job growth in our city but they must be jobs that pay a living wage that allows people to provide for their families, buy a house, and build savings. We must encourage entrepreneurship and business development in our district. We cannot allow more of our residents to slip into poverty. We must create an environment with opportunities that raise people out of poverty and allows everyone to prosper."

Accountability and transparency

  • Excerpt: "Government does not have all the answers, but It does seem to have all the information. I want to make as much information as possible available to the public in an easy to use format. Any citizen should be able to, at any time, review the city budget, statistics, for enforcement of city ordinances, school population figures, etc."
