A petition to recall Kevin Turner from his position on the Clawson Board of Education in Michigan was filed in January 2016. The recall never made it to the ballot as the petition was rejected by the Oakland County Board of Election Commissioners due to unclear language.[1][2]
Shelley Holloway, the leader of the recall effort, accused Turner of violating the Michigan Open Meetings Act during discussions to privatize the school district's custodial services.[1]
Recall supporters
Holloway, a mother of a district student, filed the petition to recall Turner. “Truthfully, I did it because no one else would,” said Holloway. The following reasons for recall were listed on the petition:[1]
- The fact that agendas of meetings from the summer of 2015 were not posted in a timely manner, which did not comply with the Michigan Open Meetings Act.
- The following statement Turner made at a public board meeting: “As a leader, sometimes you do not have perfect info to make decisions. If you wait for all the info, time is wasted.”
- Turner's lack of encouragement for his fellow board members to express opinions and facts.
Holloway also said Turner had not been open, honest or logical during school board meetings, specifically in meetings when the board discussed privatizing the district's custodial services. The board ultimately voted 4-3 in favor.[1]
Holloway further said that Turner has blocked other people from speaking at meetings. “I’ve seen him do it several times with board members and other members of the community. He will literally cut you off mid-sentence, and it doesn’t matter what you say. And that is not acceptable,” said Holloway.[1]
Recall opponents
Turner responded to Holloway's recall petition by saying, "I support her rights as a Michigan citizen to submit a petition for the recall of a public official. I feel the language on her petition isn’t clear or factual."[1]
