Three of the seven seats on the Killeen Independent School District board of trustees were up for at-large general election on May 7, 2016. In the Place 1 race, incumbent Shelley Wells defeated challenger Phillip Floyd. Place 2 incumbent Susan Jones won re-election against challenger Laura Allen. Place 3 incumbent Corbett Lawler defeated challengers Amanda Casebier and Phyllis Nairn.[1]

Teacher Phuong “Lan” Carter originally filed to run in the Place 1 race. She withdrew from the race in February 2016 in order to avoid a conflict of interest with her campaign for the Democratic nomination in the Texas House of Representatives District 54 election.[2]

Voter and candidate information

The Killeen Independent Board of Trustees consists of seven members elected at-large to three-year terms. Each member is elected to a specific place on the board, but represents the entire district. Elections are held every year in May with two or three seats on the ballot. The general election for Places 1, 2, and 3 took place on May 7, 2016. There was no primary election.[3] The Place 6 and 7 seats were up for election in 2015, and the Place 4 and 5 seats were up for election in 2014.

School board candidates had to file paperwork with the school district secretary by February 19, 2016. Each candidate had to be at least 18 years old, a registered voter and a resident of the district for a minimum of six months.[4]
