An effort in Chesapeake, Ohio, to recall Mayor Kim Aldakar was initiated in 2021. Recall organizers submitted signatures to the Lawrence County Election Commission, but Lawrence County Prosecutor Brigham Anderson ruled that the petition was invalid because Ohio law does not authorize non-chartered municipalities to hold recall elections.[1][2]

Recall supporters

The recall effort was organized by former Chesapeake Councilman Terry Griffith, who cited the following as reasons for a recall election:[1]

  • The mayor is unable to provide unofficial municipalities with a transparent and unified government agency that follows the procedures and requirements of the Ohio Amendment Code;
  • In addition to funding and end-of-2020 reports that have not yet been submitted to the county auditor, there have been multiple cases of neglect of duty;
  • The fire contract was left unsigned, violating the potential expiration of residents’ fire protection, and the mayor was unable to appoint a Street Commissioner for more than a year and a half. This is a requirement of the Ohio Revised Code.[3]
