I am the mother of 4 adult children who all attended Minneapolis Public Schools, a former alternative-education high school teacher, and current school board member.
  • We have to increase the proficiency rate for all students; provide engaging pre-school programs, have students reading by third grade, and ensure students graduate prepared for college or career.
  • Be a good steward of public funds — right-size the district while serving the whole child with strong academics, arts, and physical and mental health supports.
  • Expanding successful programs, like the Spanish dual-language immersion program.
I am passionate about equitable solutions. I want to ensure all students receive the supports they need to be successful. This includes seeing themselves in the curriculum and staff.
A school board member needs to be able to communicate with their community.
My first job was as a city lifeguard. I started when I was old enough to be a lifeguard in high school, working at city parks and rec centers every summer. I returned to lifeguarding at a YMCA as a young mother because it gave me the flexibility to work and be a mother and wife. Bring a lifeguard taught me the importance of service to community and how to create safe, fun spaces. It was a great foundation for my teaching career and for the role I have in public service.
School board members must create policy, balance the budget, and hire/fire/supervise a superintendent.
My constituents are the students and their families first. Also, district staff and city residents.
I will work with other governmental bodies. For instance, lobby state legislators to effectively fund public schools, work with the City to ensure safe schools and neighborhoods, use County supports to increase student access to health supports, and ensure Parks have programming for students and their families.
