I am Dr. Kim Sexton-Lewter, a mom, wife, teacher, health educator, social justice advocate and community organizer. I have lived, worked, volunteered and worshiped in Senate District 34, for the past 18 years. My children have all matriculated through Kannapolis City Schools, graduated college and have gone on to become productive members of the community. Here I have built friendships, lost loved ones and earned the respect and appreciation of those with whom I live and work. I have knocked on doors, phone banked and listened as a community organizer. I’ve worked closely with local community groups to improve the lives of our county residents; and continue to help to create change at the grassroots level. I bring 30 years of experience as an educator, organizer and advocate for equity in education and public health to address city, county and state policy. As an active member of this community, I am a staunch advocate of policies that improve families’ wellbeing, protect women’s reproductive rights, empower working people and protect citizens from government overreach. As your senator for district 34 I will be a powerful voice for all of my constituents
  • As Senator for SD 34 my goal is to re-introduce North Carolina to People Centered Politics. I plan to listen to and be a strong voice for the constituents I serve. Residents of Cabarrus County deserve to have their neighbor, a member of the community that actually represents them in the General Assembly. I believe co-governance will help restore community confidence in our state government. When lawmakers include community in the legislative process we strengthen buy in and create an atmosphere of trust.
  • As Senator for SD 34 I will bring evidence and logic back to decision-making. I believe the North Carolina General Assembly should be dedicated to making decisions informed by evidence and relevant data. Legislation should prioritize the concerns of the electorate and be data driven for the most effective outcomes. I act by faith but I’m clear on how public policy is derived and implemented. I will not compromise on this principle and instead focus on crafting legislation that addresses the specific challenges facing our state and its diverse regions. My Mission will be to pass legislation that effectively addresses the needs of North Carolinians and their communities.
  • I believe every North Carolinian deserves to live in “whole” communities. I am a staunch advocate for seeing every citizen reside in communities, rural and urban, that offer great public schools, affordable homes, access to healthcare, and quality jobs that pay a living wage. As residents of the state we should live with clean air, safe drinking water and freedom from the government telling us who to love or when to start a family. As your senator, I will promote policies that improve lives and ensure the safety and well being of families, while building a better NC for the working class, rural communities and small business owners across the state.
I truly believe education can be the great equalizer. As a former public school teacher who has only attended public schools from kindergarten to graduate school, I am a big advocate for public school education. I know how important it is for every child to get an honest, high-quality education. When we invest in our public schools, we invest in not just our children’s future, but the future of our community. As Senator, I will fight to increase teacher pay; expand Pre K and after school programs; give every child access to the technology they need to succeed; and invest in trade and job readiness programs.
My very first job was as a Patient Companion at Crown Nursing Home in Brooklyn, NY. I worked there less than a year, but that experience shaped me immensely, in both my personal and professional life and has made me an advocate for senior care. At this job, I spent 3 days a week having a meal, playing cards, playing checkers, reading, doing crossword puzzles, singing, dancing, writing letters and sometimes just sitting outside talking or taking a walk with the seniors living at Crown. At 14 years old, I was having conversations about rising health care costs, financial security, loneliness, disease and even abuse and neglect. I got a firsthand look at what elder care was and it would be instrumental in my decision to not put my mom, a retired geriatric nurse, in a senior facility. I was fortunate to keep her at home with me and to take care of her until she transitioned in 2016. Til this day I am a true advocate for older adults, often making friends with people twice my age and in my leadership practice taking special care of the elders entrusted to my care.
I believe it is beneficial to build relationships with other legislators, both within and out of your party affiliation. My neighbors and I don’t share agreement on everything, but we recognize our cooperation is necessary to enjoy the community we live in. I expect the same from other legislators. Where we can find common ground, we should do so. When we cannot, I will leverage whatever I can for my constituents. I prefer to get things done. Sitting at the negotiating table is how you get things done and with my background in conflict resolution and mediation, I expect that I will be able to build relationships with even my most difficult legislative colleagues.
