Biography

Kim Shelton was born in Washington, D.C. She obtained a degree from the PTC Career Institute in January 1988. As of 2020, Shelton worked as a bus operator. She was a member of the NAACP, National Council of Negro Women, the League of Women Voters, and the Sierra Club.

Who are you? Tell us about yourself.

Kim Shelton grew up in the nation's capital in public housing. A product of the DC Public School system, Kim got her first job while in High School through Mayor Barry's summer youth program as a math and reading tutor. She graduated with honors from Eastern High School in 1986. Kim's parents always taught their children to have a heart for helping others which led her to a career in nursing. Kim served as a nursing assistant for 17 years then transitioned into the transportation industry.

Through her years of working, Kim saw the plight of the homeless and decided to take up that cause. She began to purchase and collect blankets, toiletries, and other items to give to those she saw had need. Kim's effort with the homeless morphed into an organization she calls PopUp Meals for The Homeless. This project is "her baby" which she funds and runs independently in Washington, DC and has the vision to do this same program in both Anne Arundel and Prince Georges counties.

As a result of her work in the community for the last 30 years and seeing some of the same kinds of things since she has become a Maryland resident, Kim believes that the best way to effectuate change is through political action.

• Improving education, making it equal for all
• Curtailing gun violence
• Income-based housing, especially for Veterans and Seniors

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Improving policies on police and citizens interaction.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I look up to both my mother and my grandmother because of the "do until others as you would have them do unto you" value instilled in me growing up.

That I served my constituency well.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

Crystal McCullough, a civilian teacher, died in the Challenger Space Shuttle. I was 13.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

My first job was as a math and reading tutor in Mayor Barry's summer youth program which I held for two years.

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

Center of My Joy

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

My cousin being shot by the police in Prince Georges' County.

What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?

The House of Representatives is unique in that it represents the people -- all 435 congressional districts n the United States ... not the land mass as is illustrated in the Senate.

Do you believe that it's beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?

No ... all they need is a genuine care and concern to make circumstances better.

What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?

Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?

No, I believe the term should be 4 years to incorporate a two-year learning curve.
