I am Kirt Beasley, retired Lieutenant Colonel from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office. I have over 24 years of service with the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office. I managed a multi million dollar budget and major contracts with the Sheriff’s Office. I have job knowledge of every division within the Sheriff’s Office. I am a successful business owner. I am financially and fiscally sound. I spearheaded several programs and initiatives for the betterment of the detainees. I worked with justice partners and stakeholders to reduce jail population, and in doing this, I saved Fulton County tax payers millions of dollars. I am prepared to restore integrity to the Sheriff’s Office and regain control of the Fulton County Jail.
  • My first key message I want the voters to remember about me is my integrity. I want to bring back the integrity of the Fulton County Sheriff's Office and I will start with not loosely and wastefully spending the tax dollars. I will not adopt the mindset, because I am Sheriff, I can spend funds however I want. I will follow policies that are in place and establish a check and balance system for all divisions within the Sheriff's Office to ensure funds are being spent properly for what is needed for the Office and the detainees. I will be accountable and accept all responsibilities for how the tax dollars are spent.
  • My second key message I want the voters to remember about me is my compassion. I care about all people within Fulton County, to include the staff serving our county and the people being housed at the Fulton County Jail. I am very concerned about the the severe understaffing of the jail that has resulted in numerous vicious attacks on staff and detainees, as well as, deaths of detainees. I will make a command decision to cease all non-essential services and redeploy those staff members to the jail where there is currently a crisis.
  • My third key message I want the voters to remember about me is I am a team player. I want to collaborate with churches, communities, businesses, schools, law enforcement agencies and non-profit organizations to develop plans for our young adults to give other options that will divert them from becoming involved in the justice system. For the ones that are incarcerated at the Fulton County Jail, we will encourage participation in the different programs being offered such as Life Skills, Literacy, GED, Canine, Substance Abuse and other programs we will develop when I become Sheriff.
One area of public policy I am personally passionate about is true criminal justice reform when we stop the abuse of power as law enforcement officers, stop racial profiling and end sentencing discrepancies at the court level. Another area I am passionate about is this school to prison pipeline. Some violations at schools in today's time such as talking , use of profanity and even uniform violations result in expulsion. I would like to see a contractual agreement signed between parents and schools that require parents to volunteer hours at the school where their child attends, as well, more communication between in teachers and parents.
I look up to my mother and her example is one I am following. To briefly tell why my mom's leadership in my life was so important is because my mom worked three jobs for years as she saved to get our family our own land and home so we could move off a plantation. The days I remember living on this plantation was not as horrible as some. I began working at the age of 12 chopping and picking cotton but I was paid for my services. But as one grows and see other things in life that are better, mom had a vision to get her family off that plantation. With my mom's hard work and her ability to never met a stranger, she connected with a lady who saw my mom's determination and she sold my mom our first acre of land and there began my vision of seeing nothing is not achievable. I am running for Sheriff of Fulton County because I have that determination my mom has.
There is an old film entitled "Above the Law", staring Steven Seagal that encompasses the message that all politicians need to hear, nobody is above the law and if the law is broken, that political official should face the consequences that come with having broken the law.
Some characteristics an elected official should have are being a strong leader who will lead by example, a relationship builder one who will work with other entities, a team player one that will work with anyone, be emotionally mature to not display anger if challenged or asked a question, be approachable so staff nor citizens are afraid to make suggestions, be prepared and be fiscally sound ensuring the elected official understands budgeting and basic financial planning.
I believe some core responsibilities of someone elected to office are interact with the constituents, listen to concerns from the citizens and address those concerns, attend different organizational meetings, visit senior communities, visit schools and churches.
My views on financial transparency and governmental accountability are very strong. I believe all financial records should be made readily available to the public upon request. There should be nothing within those financial records that should be questionable. This is how trust within the community is created and maintained. As a public official, you should not have anything to hide. As it relates to government accountability, when one stands and decides they want to run for a certain pubic office, at that moment that person has accepted the roll of being held accountable for any and all things under his or her leadership, the good and the not so good. You chose to run for a particular office and you are now responsible and accountable for that office.
