I am Kizzie Thomas, a lifelong resident of District 2, a dedicated educator, and a passionate advocate for my community. Growing up and raising my family here, I have seen firsthand the challenges our neighborhoods face and the potential we have to create meaningful change. My commitment to service has been shaped by my experiences in education, where I have spent years empowering students and families. I am running for City Council to bridge the gap between government and the people, ensuring that every resident has a voice in decisions that shape our future.
  • Community-Driven Leadership I believe in leadership that listens. District 2 residents deserve a representative who is accessible, transparent, and actively engaged in addressing their concerns. I will work to ensure our community has a direct voice in the decisions that impact our daily lives.
  • Safer, Stronger Neighborhoods Public safety is more than just policing—it’s about investing in resources that prevent crime before it happens. I will advocate for well-lit streets, better infrastructure, youth programs, and partnerships that build a safer, more vibrant District 2.
  • Economic Growth & Opportunity Our district deserves equitable investment. I will push for small business support, workforce development, and job opportunities that uplift our community. By fostering economic growth, we can create lasting change and improve the quality of life for all residents.
I am deeply passionate about education, public safety, economic development, and ensuring our elderly community has the support they deserve. I believe in investing in youth programs, improving community infrastructure, and supporting local businesses to create a stronger, more connected District 2.
Additionally, our senior citizens deserve dignity, safety, and access to essential resources. I will advocate for more affordable housing options, improved transportation services, and expanded senior wellness programs to ensure they can live independently and comfortably. I will also work to strengthen community outreach efforts, making sure seniors are informed about available services and have a direct line to the support they need.
While City Council is primarily a local government body, its role is uniquely important within the broader state government and legal system because it serves as the closest link between residents and policymaking. Unlike state or federal officials, City Council members address immediate, community-level issues while also ensuring that local laws align with state regulations and legal frameworks.
I would recommend The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander for a deep understanding of systemic inequities and how policies disproportionately impact marginalized communities. Additionally, The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein provides critical insight into the history of discriminatory housing policies and why advocating for equitable community investment is essential.

For leadership and community-driven governance, The Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama offers a compelling perspective on civic engagement and the power of policy to create meaningful change.
An elected official must be honest, accountable, and accessible to the people they serve. Leadership should be rooted in transparency, integrity, and a deep commitment to community engagement. It’s not just about making decisions—it’s about listening to constituents, amplifying their voices, and ensuring government works for the people, not against them.
I bring a deep commitment to service, a strong work ethic, and a passion for community empowerment—essential for a successful officeholder.

✅ Leadership & Advocacy – My experience in education and community engagement has taught me how to lead, listen, and advocate for those whose voices often go unheard. I know how to bring people together to solve problems and create real change.
✅ Accountability & Transparency – I believe that leadership requires honesty and accountability. I am committed to being accessible and transparent so that residents always know where I stand and how decisions are being made on their behalf.
✅ Problem-Solving & Action-Oriented – I don’t just talk about issues—I work to find solutions. Whether it’s securing resources for schools, improving public safety, or supporting small businesses, I am committed to turning ideas into action.

✅ Resilience & Determination – My personal and professional experiences have taught me perseverance. I understand the challenges our community faces because I have lived them, and I am determined to fight for meaningful, lasting change.
The primary responsibility of a City Council member is to represent the interests of the community while making informed decisions on policies, budgets, and services that affect residents' daily lives. This means advocating for safer neighborhoods, stronger infrastructure, economic opportunities, and quality public services. It also requires collaboration with other local leaders, organizations, and residents to drive real, lasting change.
I want to leave a legacy of empowerment, advocacy, and transformation in District 2. My journey—from growing up in this community to becoming an educator and advocate—has been shaped by the belief that education, opportunity, and strong leadership can change lives.

I want residents to remember me as a leader who listened, took action, and made real changes that improved their daily lives—whether it’s safer streets, stronger schools, or better economic opportunities. More than anything, I want to inspire the next generation to step up, use their voices, and continue the fight for a stronger, more united community long after my time in office.
The first historical event I remember was the passing of my brother when I was in 6th grade. It was a life-altering moment that shaped much of who I am today. The loss taught me about resilience, community support, and the importance of leaning on others during tough times. It also deepened my commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of others, especially those facing their own challenges.
My very first job was at Bill Miller's, where I worked for two years.
If I could be any fictional character, I would choose Magneto from X-Men. While often seen as a villain, Magneto is a complex leader driven by a deep sense of justice and protection for his people. He fights for those who have been marginalized and refuses to accept oppression, using his intelligence, power, and strategy to challenge unjust systems.
Like Magneto, I believe in standing up for my community, advocating for those who have been overlooked, and using every resource available to bring about real change. While I may take a different approach—one rooted in unity and collaboration—I admire his unwavering commitment to his cause and his people.
Yes, one of the lesser-known but critical responsibilities of a City Council member is the power to influence and shape the city’s budget. Many people don’t realize that City Council plays a key role in determining how taxpayer dollars are allocated—whether for public safety, infrastructure improvements, small business support, or social services.

Additionally, City Council members have the ability to advocate for zoning and land use decisions, which impact housing affordability, economic development, and the overall growth of the district. These decisions can either encourage responsible development that benefits residents or contribute to displacement and gentrification.

Another important but often overlooked responsibility is holding city departments accountable. Council members have the power to question city agencies, demand transparency, and push for policies that improve efficiency and fairness in government services.
While experience can be valuable, what matters most is a deep connection to the community, a commitment to service, and the ability to lead with integrity. Many great leaders come from backgrounds outside of traditional politics, bringing fresh ideas and real-life experience to the table. My background in education and community advocacy has prepared me to listen, collaborate, and create meaningful change.
Strong communication, problem-solving, and leadership skills are essential. The ability to build relationships, analyze data, advocate for resources, and create policies that serve the public good is crucial. A deep understanding of budgeting, city infrastructure, and community development also helps ensure that decisions lead to long-term progress.
Financial transparency and accountability are non-negotiable. Taxpayers deserve to know where their money is going and how it benefits their community. I support clear, accessible reporting of city budgets, responsible spending, and public engagement in decision-making to ensure that government remains accountable to the people.
