Candidate Connection

Knute Ogren participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on October 5, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Knute Ogren's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1. Sustainable funding for: Schools, for promises to retirees, and for infrastructure needs

2. Opioid Crisis -- public funding for treatment and legalization of cannabis
3. Bring Common Ground and Decency back to the County Delegation discussions.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

There is a need for respectful, yet passionate dialogue in the public square. Every issue, every single one, is an issue that we can manage when we are open to learning a different perspective, when we insist on using data rather than just opinion, when we insist on decency, and when we seek common ground. Whether it's about taxes, or the flight of NH's young adult to other states, or the opioid crisis, or the unsustainable practices for funding our schools -- our passionate discussions must be grounded in respect. We are all in this together.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Knute Ogren answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

In all honesty, I look up to my mom. From as far back as I can remember, she modeled - and continues to model to this day - a life of humility, of generosity, and of hard work. "If everyone would just do what's right, we'll all be just fine." She doesn't just say it -- she does it. Greed is not what's right. Selfishness is not what's right. Hate is not what's right. Unfairness is not what's right. Secrecy is not what's right. Join me as I try to be good-- the way my mom is -- by caring for my neighbor, and sacrificing a little bit for the sake of the community, and exuding goodwill toward my fellow citizen, and insisting that each one receive a fair shake, and making sure that everyone in the room knows what's going on.[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
A Letter from a Birmingham Jail by Martin Luther King, Jr. (people with power must use it for the sake of the ones who have no power), the Book of James (put your faith in action), First You Have to Row a Little Boat by Bode (growth comes from prior growth, learning comes from prior learning), and any singing you can find of Fannie Lou Hamer (she was an unbelievable force for change using, among other things, her gift for song leading).[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Honesty, humility, skills for listening, and commitment to finding common ground.[3]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
I don't claim to have all the answers and I'm willing to try. I am disgusted by some of the selfish and indecent votes by the incumbents and think it's important to offer an alternative.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Listen. Look at the big picture. Understand the other. Look at the data. Create conditions that invites people to meet you on common ground.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I'd like to be known as someone who had a passion for gathering the large majority of people in the big slice of common ground. The squeaky ones on the left and right are very small in number. Let the polite ones, the ones who tend to stay quiet, speak up for the reasonable middle ground.[3]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
I like Christmas because so many people seem to be kinder and more generous than they oftentimes otherwise seem.[3]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Last week's choir anthem. I can't wait until it's gone. Ugh ...[3]
What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?
Seeking a sustainable funding model for the important public good.[3]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Of course. We are a better community when we know each other's stories and challenges and gifts and hopes.[3]
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
An 85 year old man was dead set against legalizing cannabis until my colleague spent, literally 6 minutes explaining an alternative view. At that point, he changed his mind and is in favor of legalization. He was not fed fear-filled opinions and small mindedness. He was given facts. Whether we like them or not, there are true things happening. Let's be honest about the true things, and let's trust that citizens can handle the truth. I was impressed with this man who learned and was courageous enough to change his mind.[3]
