Kolten believes that the current political divide between Democrats and Republicans is simply not conducive to an effective form of governance. In order to truly act as a people who exercise our inherent right to govern ourselves, we have to shed partisan absolutism and focus instead on growth and progress. It’s time that we started electing representatives that truly care about the people whom they represent. Though Kolten is an avid progressive and Democrat, he is also a former member of the Republican Party who has seen first hand what violent and militant political factions are capable of. If elected, Kolten won’t work on behalf of the Democratic party – He’ll work on behalf of the People of House District 21; representing their interests, needs and concerns.
  • Criminal Justice Reform Kolten comes from a family of Law Enforcement officers and strongly believes that the criminal justice system is in dire straights. The issues stemming from our criminal justice system aren’t the fault of police officers or even offenders – There is a serious lack of resources, training and rehabilitation options available to those who enforce the law as well as those who have been incarcerated by it.
  • Civil Rights & Equality Article II, Section III of the Colorado State Constitution states as follows: “All persons have certain natural, essential and inalienable rights, among which may be reckoned the right of enjoying and defending their lives and liberties; of acquiring, possessing and protecting property; and of seeking and obtaining their safety and happiness.” Kolten strongly believes in protecting and solidifying the rights of all individuals to enjoy and participate in life as equals under the law – This includes LGBTQ rights, Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, and Civil Rights generally.
  • Mental Health & Crisis Intervention According to the Colorado Health Institute, “The rate of suicide in Colorado remained the same between 2018 and 2019, but the number of lives lost each year in the state has been slowly increasing since 2013. The most recent data available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that in 2018, Colorado had one of the 10 highest age-adjusted suicide death rates in the nation, at 21.9 deaths per 100,000 people.” Kolten believes in increasing both the number and availability of mental health resources throughout our community and throughout the state at large, including additional training for first responders specifically pertaining to crisis intervention and suicide prevention.
