A former member of the Douglas County Physical School and Protection Funding Committee, and 30-year career Denver prosecutor, Kory Nelson, has lived in Douglas County for 18 years, Kory and his wife, a Reading Recovery Literacy Specialist working in Douglas County neighborhood elementary schools, They have one child, a daughter at Legend High School, where Kory has volunteered on the School Accountability Committee for the past 5 years. Kory is a U.S. Army Cold War Veteran, having served in West Berlin, Germany. He graduated from the Arizona State University College of Law, a top 25 law school, in 1989. Kory has volunteered in Douglas County for years. He has been appointed by the Douglas County Sheriff to the Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC) for over 10 years. Kory initiated and co-chaired the PSAC School Safety Subcommittee in February of 2018, in response to the Stoneman-Douglas High School Shooting in Parkland, Florida. He gave a 2-hour briefing on School Safety to the County Commissioners and School Board just 8 days before the STEM school shooting, recommending a fully-staffed and robust SRO Program. After the Douglas County Board of Commissioners committed a one-time grant of $10.0 million for school safety, Kory was appointed to the committee to advise the on how to spend it. Kory also lobbied for additional on-going funding for FTE for SROs. The Commissioners granted Kory's request and came back with an additional $3.0 million annually in matching funds. Kory has developed relationships with the law enforcement agencies and the District Attorney's Office in order to build collaboration in enhancing school safety,
  • School Safety is a multi-faceted issue with multiple parts; I have a 7-point School Safety Plan on my website.
  • My parents were school teachers. My wife is a school teacher. I am motivated to engage with the DCSD faculty in a professional manner to improve retention rates,
  • As a military veteran and a 1st Amendment legal expert, I have a higher respect for Parents right to speak at public hearings. David Ray's forced expulsion of Aaron Johnson, a violation of his 1st Amendment Rights, can not be tolerated,
"I am committed to taking my passion and expertise in school safety and working in a true partnership with the other stakeholders, with whom I have built a solid relationship, to make a substantial difference in enhancing school safety," said Nelson. "We need a School Board that actually uses the words 'School Safety' in their official Strategic Plan - we have not had that. I will make School Safety the #1 Priority of the District. We can come together and 'Fix It'.
My heroes are anyone in the U.S. military, law enforcement, and school teachers. All of them engage in public service for the benefit of our community. They should ALL be greeted with "Thanks for your service."
An education and respectfully understanding of the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the basic concepts of due process, fundamental fairness.
I am patient in researching the facts and details of issues before applying the appropriate standards in evaluating the appropriate path to proceed.
He made a positive difference.
During the summer between my Sophomore and Junior year in high school, I worked at the Fremont Meat Market.
George Orwell's 1984. While in the U.S. Army, I was stationed West Berlin, Germany. I used to travel through Checkpoint Charlie on a regular basis. I used my limited German to engage with local Germans and I learned what a true totalitarian socialist society could do to suppress Freedom and the human spirit. This book provides many lessons to learn about the incremental steps down a slippery slope to such a dangerous centralized government with too much power.
My mother died in 1991 at the age of 58 from head and neck cancer. Not having her in my life, especially to experience the joy of her only granddaughter's birth and childhood is my biggest regret.
To hire the best Superintendent to improve the performance of the faculty and students while providing the best policies to achieve that goal.
Our parents, students, faculty and taxpayers of our district,
I have a pre-existing relationship with our law enforcement agencies that will help in enhancing school safety. As a 5-year member of the School Accountability Committee for Legend High School, I appreciate the value of getting down into the trenches and listening to folks there.
By putting parents' feedback as a priority, both in respect and in scheduling. This current board is known for their arrogance and disrespect of parents. They expelled a Parent from a public hearing in a clearly illegal act of Prior Restraint. They forced parents of the STEM HR School to wait for over 2 hours in the rain when they intentionally delayed public comment for 2 hours to discourage participation. Their single employee - the Superintendent - publicly harassed Ascent Charter School, in an successful attempt to force them out of the School District.
Excited engagement. I will rely upon the excellent staff and administration to develop such strategies,
Confidence with a commitment to resiliency, flexibility with a life-long love of learning.
I support Technical Career Education efforts. I would also like to examine the possibility of resuming music education in our elementary schools.
I would rely upon my pre-existing relationships with state representatives and state senators to support state funding reforms.
The two most important people in my life spend their days in these school buildings. Common sense and building collaborative relationships to provide sufficient physical security that meets both regional and national standards.
I supported Proposition 5A that brought the number of school counselors up to national standards. We need to do the same for SROs, who will bring the Y.E.S.S. program to our elementary and middle schools to provide resiliency and ant-bullying programming, encourage students to reach out to adults for resources for themselves or their friends.
I hope we can provide remote online classroom access through the new Collaboration Campus that was opened with Arapahoe Community College in Castle Rock.
