|For the last 11 years, I have been a dedicated mother and housewife, volunteering my time and talents for Parent Council and now as an active member of my children's public school PTA.
For the past 7 years, I have worked behind the scenes, helping with constituent services for many residents of City Council District 6, which overlaps with NC House 104.
This work has given me an inside view of the many issues we are facing in Charlotte.- We must improve outcomes for our students by focusing on making our public schools best in class while also supporting school choice.
Being a mother of 3 children with different learning abilities in the public school system has given me firsthand experience of the challenges our teachers and children face. Approximately 50% of children in the public school system are not proficient in math or reading.
We must give our teachers and students the support they need to succeed!
I am a strong proponent of the Orton-Gillingham Method and will champion funding to train every NC teacher in this method, with at least one certified teacher per elementary school.
We must change the way we are doing things when half of our students are struggling. - We must bring law and order back to our city through meaningful legislative reform for our broken criminal justice system and struggling first responders. The criminal justice system is failing our community. The rise in juvenile crime in Charlotte is alarming, but the type of crimes these children are committing is even more astonishing. In many cases, these children are being returned to their caregivers without penalty. We must reevaluate the Raise the Age legislation. Reopen our juvenile detention center to teach accountability, rehabilitate and redirect children who have gone down the wrong path. Hold our judges and magistrates accountable for how they handle criminals.
- We must address the mental health crisis in NC. After learning about the adolescent mental health crisis in NC, my husband and I turned to the private sector to find a solution. As a result, the Katie Blessing Center, an adolescent behavioral health center, is currently under construction. This will change the landscape of mental health care for youth in the Charlotte area. I will continue to be a strong advocate to ensure that no family or child is turned away from the mental health care they need.
