Krista K. Martin is a Tenth Judicial District judge for Pine County, Minnesota. She was appointed to this position in October of 2001. She was elected in 2002, 2008, 2010, and 2016.[1]

Education

Martin received her B.A. and J.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1987 and 1990, respectively.[1]

Career

Martin began her legal career in 1990 as an associate attorney of Hanft, Fride, et al. The following year, she joined the Legal Aid Service of Northeastern Minnesota, where she worked as a managing and staff attorney until 1995. She then became a partner of the firm Bina, Holm and Martin. She switched to solo practice in 1997 and, at the same time, worked as a part-time assistant public defender until her judicial appointment in 2001.[1]

Minnesota held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election occurred on August 9, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was May 31, 2016.[2] Incumbent Krista K. Martin ran unopposed in the Minnesota 10th District, Position 29 general election.[3]

Selection method

Judges of the Minnesota District Courts are all chosen in nonpartisan elections to serve six-year terms. Candidates compete in primaries, from which the top two contestants advance to the general election. Sitting judges must run for re-election if they wish to serve additional terms. While party affiliation is not designated on the ballot, incumbency is. Sitting judges who reach the age of 70 while in office are allowed to serve until the last day of their birthday month.[4]

The chief judge of each district court is selected by peer vote for a two-year term.[4]

Judges of all courts are required to be "learned in the law" and under 70 years old.[4][5]
