Four of the nine seats on the Fargo Public Schools Board of Education were up for at-large general election on June 14, 2016. In his bid for re-election, incumbent Jim Johnson faced eight challengers: Brandi Aune, David Gregor, Thomas Hill, Ahmed Kamel, John Rodenbiker, Doug Rymph, Kristi Ulrich, and Jacob Webster.[4] Election night results from June 14, 2016, showed Ulrich, Johnson, Aune, and Rodenbiker as the winners of the election. Due to the closeness of the race, however, there is the possibility for a demand recount, according to the North Dakota Secretary of State.[1]
In addition to Johnson's seat, the seats of incumbents Paul Meyers, Robin Nelson, and John Strand were on the ballot, but they did not file to run for re-election, meaning three seats were open for newcomers.[4]

Ulrich highlighted the following issues on her campaign website:
“ | Kristi Ulrich for Fargo School Board Education is the cornerstone of a strong community! I was raised in Cavalier, North Dakota and first moved to Fargo following college graduation. I earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from the University of Minnesota -Crookston. Over the past 30 years I have had the opportunity to work in both management and communication roles as well as be an active leader in the community. As past board chair of the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce, I understand the role of a governance board. My husband and I have been married for 18 years and have two children, ages 16 and 12. I am currently Co-President of the Discovery PTA. Having children in our school system has allowed me to be an active/involved parent from the elementary schools to the high school level. I just completed serving as a member on the Financial Planning Task Force. The purpose of the task force was to review and discuss the district’s short term and long range finances. Specifically, the board asked to gain feedback and a broader perspective from staff and community members regarding the impending budget revenue shortfalls due to a freeze on local taxable valuations. This allowed me to see firsthand the challenges that we have as a district and the opportunities that we have to continue providing an excellent education for all children. On this task force, I worked hard to ask questions and bring solution based ideas to the discussion. I wasn’t afraid to ask the tough questions. As a school board member, I will do the same. Lastly, I will bring my successful management and communication skills gained through my various professional roles – vital tools of an effective school board member. My work has enabled me to work collaboratively, build strong partnerships and be an integral part of the community. As Fargo Public Schools continues to grow, we must look to the future and our future is indeed bright. The Fargo School Board needs strong, passionate leaders like myself who will work together for the good of our children and the good of our community. I would appreciate your support and welcome the challenge of working for the students of our community. Please vote for Kristi Ulrich on June 14, 2016.[7] |
