An effort to recall Kristin Gibson from her position as the Trustee Area 5 representative on the San Dieguito Union High School District board of trustees did not go to a vote in 2021. Gibson resigned from her position effective March 19, 2021, citing personal reasons.[1][2]

Gibson was elected to a four-year term on the five-member board of trustees on November 6, 2018.[1][2]

Recall supporters

A group of residents from Carmel Valley, California, began the recall effort in February 2021.[1] On their website, recall supporters said:

The conduct and voting record of Trustee Gibson demonstrate that she has failed her fiduciary duty to serve students and the taxpayers as a Trustee on the SDUHSD Governing Board. Trustee Gibson has been fiscally irresponsible, approved decisions that disregard students’ best interests, and appears to have a conflict of interest with the San Dieguito Faculty Association (the teachers’ union).[3][4]

Recall opponents

Gibson said the following in her resignation letter:

This was an extremely difficult decision due to an increase in family commitments that prohibit me from dedicating the necessary time and energy to serving as a trustee, particularly during this time of the pandemic that is demanding such unprecedented and extraordinary effort from educators...It has been a privilege and an honor to serve our children and our community as a member of this Board. I have dedicated my life to education, and will continue to do so.[1][4]

Recall supporters served Gibson a notice of intent to recall in February 2021. If Gibson had not resigned, the San Diego County Registrar of Voters would have reviewed the recall petition. If it had been approved, recall supporters would have had to collect 5,269 signatures to get the recall on the ballot.[1]
