My name is Kristy Barger—a mother, writer, small-business owner, and proud member of the Schertz community. I serve as the Operations Manager and co-founder of The Barger Law Firm PLLC, where I support families through some of life’s most emotional and challenging moments. In this role, I provide steady guidance, compassion, and clarity when people need it most. I am also the co-founder of the Lotus Child Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to helping children and families through education, resources, and community outreach. Giving back has always been central to my life, and the foundation reflects my belief that strong communities are built by uplifting one another.

As a novelist, I write stories that explore culture, resilience, family, and love. Writing has taught me to listen deeply and appreciate different perspectives—skills that shape my approach to leadership and service. My professional journey, from mortgage brokerage and commercial real estate appraisal to managing a law firm, has strengthened my commitment to responsible decision-making, transparency, and community-focused solutions.

I care deeply about supporting small businesses, improving community safety, expanding sidewalks and lighting, and being a strong voice for families. Above all, I am a mom who wants a safer, stronger, and more connected future for our children and for the city we all call home.
  • Putting Community Safety First: I am committed to making Schertz a safer place for every resident. This includes strengthening traffic safety along our busiest roads, improving speed control, and creating safer routes for families and pedestrians. I will also work to address the long-standing dangers at our railroad crossings, pushing for real, lasting solutions that prevent accidents and protect lives. Additionally, I believe well-lit streets and connected sidewalks are essential for walkable, family-friendly neighborhoods. Safety is the foundation of a strong community, and it will always be my top priority.
  • Responsible, Balanced Growth: I believe growth should enhance our community, not overwhelm it. Schertz is a beautiful, family-oriented city, and we must protect the character and value of our neighborhoods. I support thoughtful development that maintains balance—ensuring we have quality housing, strong infrastructure, and manageable traffic. Overbuilding high-density apartments can strain schools, roads, and public services, ultimately impacting home values. My goal is to promote development that benefits residents, preserves our city’s charm, and keeps Schertz a desirable place to live, work, and raise a family.
  • Supporting Local Businesses and Our Local Economy: Small businesses are the backbone of Schertz, and when they thrive, our whole community grows stronger. I want to create an environment where new and existing small business owners feel supported, valued, and encouraged to invest in our city. This includes improving local incentives, streamlining processes, and reducing barriers that make it difficult for entrepreneurs to start or expand their businesses. By strengthening our local economy and keeping business dollars within Schertz, we create more jobs, more opportunities, and a more vibrant community for everyone.
I am deeply committed to shaping public policies that engender tangible improvements in the daily lives of residents in Schertz. Ensuring the safety of the community is my foremost concern, encompassing enhancements in traffic management, the safety of intersections, and the pursuit of sustainable solutions to railroad crossing issues. I am also sincerely invested in responsible development and zoning practices that protect property values while avoiding overcrowding. Supporting small businesses holds significant importance, as a robust local economy benefits the entire community. I advocate for investments in sidewalks, lighting, parks, and infrastructure to foster a safer, more walkable, and interconnected community for all.
The unique qualities of this office stem from its proximity to the people, allowing it to influence daily life and respond promptly to community needs directly. Within the state’s legal framework, the City Council must adhere to state laws, transparency requirements, and accountability standards while also advocating for the priorities of residents. This position serves as a vital link between the community and the broader state system, protecting local interests, promoting responsible growth, and ensuring that the voices of residents are heard and represented within the larger structure of government.
I've always admired my parents for their incredible work ethic and resilience. As refugees, they came to this country and dedicated themselves to building a better life for our family. With a military background, they instilled in us discipline, structure, and respect. Growing up without privilege, we quickly learned to value what we had and not take anything for granted. They taught us the importance of hard work, integrity, and honoring our commitments. Their sacrifices and strength continue to inspire how I live and the principles I uphold today.
Integrity, accountability, and a genuine dedication to service are the core principles I live by. I ground my decisions in facts, fairness, and the long-term well-being of our community. I value treating everyone with respect, communicating openly, and remaining accessible to the people I serve. I aim to balance vision with practicality, work diligently, and collaborate to address real issues. Above all, I strive to have the courage to do what is right—even when it is difficult—and I always place the community’s interests above personal or political gain.
I believe the core responsibilities of someone being elected are to listen to residents, address local needs, and work collaboratively to improve safety, infrastructure, and quality of life. Above all, they must act with integrity and prioritize the best interests of the community.
The legacy I want to leave isn’t measured by how much I save for my children financially, but by the values and foundation I teach them. I want to give them integrity, education, and the understanding that a strong character will take them further than money ever could. With these qualities, I believe they will build successful and meaningful lives of their own. If I can give them the tools to think critically, act honestly, and stay true to themselves, I know they will one day look back and thank me for the legacy that truly mattered.
The first major historical event I remember experiencing was the attack on the Twin Towers. I was in my early twenties at the time and living in California. Even from across the country, the news was shocking and unforgettable. I remember exactly where I was when I heard about it, and the sense of disbelief and sadness that followed. It was one of those moments that changed the entire nation and shaped how many of us saw the world moving forward.
My first job was at KFC when I was 16 years old. I worked there for a few months during the summer, and it was my first real introduction to responsibility and earning my own money. It taught me the value of hard work, punctuality, and learning to work effectively as part of a team. Even though it was a short-term job, it helped shape my work ethic and gave me a sense of independence at a young age.
My favorite book is actually one I wrote myself. It’s a story rooted in resilience and sacrifice, and two themes that reflect not only the characters’ journeys but also the experiences and truths that have shaped me as a person. Writing it allowed me to explore strength, vulnerability, and the endurance that comes from loving deeply and fighting for what matters. It’s meaningful to me because each chapter holds a piece of my heart and the lessons I’ve learned.
If I could be a fictional character, I would choose to be an angel. Angels have wings that let them soar anywhere—through the sky, over mountains, and into places people cannot reach. More importantly, they exist to help, guide, and protect those in need. Being an angel means having the power to bring comfort to the broken, strength to the weary, and hope to those who feel lost. It symbolizes freedom, compassion, and purpose. To fly without limits and serve without expecting anything in return is the kind of character I would want to be.
What has been a struggle in my life is living up to my words and maintaining my integrity when those around me are not like me. It’s something I continue to face, and it has become an ongoing learning process and figuring out how to maintain my integrity while dealing with others who may not share the same values, discipline, or mindset.
Yes. Many people don’t realize how much influence the City Council has on issues that affect their daily lives. Beyond passing ordinances, the Council helps shape long-term planning for roads, traffic safety, zoning, neighborhood development, and the allocation of tax dollars. The Council also has the authority to set priorities for police, fire, and emergency services, determine the rate of city growth, and ensure transparency and accountability in every department.
Another lesser-known responsibility is overseeing city contracts, budgeting decisions, and policies that impact local businesses, homeowners, and future development. The Council also plays a key role in ensuring compliance with state laws and open-government requirements, protecting residents’ rights to information and participation. These responsibilities make the office far more powerful—and far more important—than many people realize, because the decisions made at this level directly shape the character, safety, and future of the community.
I believe previous experience in government or politics can be helpful, but it is not required to be effective in this role. What matters most is a strong commitment to public service, the ability to listen to residents, and a willingness to learn the processes and laws that guide city decisions. Local government benefits from a mix of perspectives, including those with experience and those who bring fresh ideas, real-world problem-solving skills, and a genuine connection to the community. Ultimately, dedication, integrity, and a readiness to work hard for the people are far more important than a political background.
I believe the most helpful skills for this office are strong communication, good judgment, and the ability to listen openly to the community. It’s also important for a City Council member to understand budgeting, planning, basic legal processes, and to have solid problem-solving and collaboration skills. Experience in community engagement or business is beneficial, but above all, dedication, integrity, and a true commitment to doing what’s best for the community matter most.
I believe this office is unique because it is the level of government closest to the people, giving it a direct influence on everyday life. The City Council shapes local policies on safety, infrastructure, zoning, and development, and can quickly respond to the community’s needs. It plays a vital role in directing the city’s growth, managing tax dollars, and overseeing local services. By working directly with residents and city staff, the Council ensures that community priorities are heard, protected, and reflected in every decision. This close connection to the people is what makes the office both distinct and essential within local government.
Currently, I haven't formally sought official endorsement from any organization or individual. However, I'm thankful for the encouragement and support from many experienced community leaders and politically active residents who believe in my vision for Schertz. Their confidence in my commitment, integrity, and ability to listen to the community means a lot to me.
As a candidate, I feel truly grateful to have listened to many heartfelt stories from our community members. One story that particularly stayed with me was from a resident who had recently lost her spouse. She shared how life had become so overwhelming—juggling her home responsibilities, supporting her children, and navigating the system all on her own. What moved me the most wasn't just her difficulties, but her incredible resilience. Despite everything she was going through, she expressed her unwavering belief in our city, in the kindness of people, and in the hope that her voice could contribute to building a brighter future for her family. Moments like these remind me of the true purpose of public service. Behind every vote is a real person with real challenges and a story that truly deserves to be heard.
One thing I truly cherish is the life I’ve built through resilience, discipline, and hard work, and values deeply rooted in my upbringing. Growing up in a family that faced hardships, with refugees who worked tirelessly to rebuild their lives from scratch, taught me so much. We didn’t come from privilege, and nothing was simply handed to us. Instead, we learned early on the meaning of sacrifice, the importance of discipline, and the vital importance of standing by our promises. These lessons have stayed with me and inspired me to work my first job at 16, fight for every opportunity, and remain steadfast no matter how tough the journey became. They’ve taught me to rely on myself, take responsibility for my decisions, and keep moving forward—even when the chances weren’t always in my favor.

Whenever I look at the businesses I’ve built, the family I support, the people I serve, and the hardships I’ve faced, I see more than just achievements—I see my parents’ sacrifices reflected in everything I do, and I feel the strength of the values they poured into me. My greatest accomplishment isn’t just a single moment; it’s becoming the woman I am today, all thanks to the solid foundation they provided.
