Kristy Campbell is a Republican political strategist, originally hailing from Miami, Florida. She served as national press secretary for Jeb Bush's 2016 presidential campaign. Campbell graduated from Florida State University in 2004.[1][2]

Career

After graduating from Florida State University in 2004, Campbell worked as communications director for the Florida Department of Community Affairs. After leaving this position in 2006, she became the press secretary in the Executive office of Jeb Bush (R) during his Florida governorship, a position she held from 2006 through 2007.[1][3]

She moved on to serve as the Florida communications director for Mitt Romney (R) during his 2008 presidential bid. After leaving the Romney campaign, she became communications director at the Foundation for Florida's Future, Bush's nonprofit organization. This position overlapped with her work as communications director on Bill McCollum's (R) campaign for the Republican nomination for Florida governor in 2010.[1][3]

In June 2011, Campbell became communications director for the American Conservative Union. She returned to work for Romney in 2012, this time serving as deputy communications director for media affairs on his failed presidential bid.[1][3]

After exploring the possibility of a presidential run for several months, Bush officially announced his candidacy on June 15, 2015, at Miami Dade College. He largely focused on economic issues and said he would "take Washington – the static capital of this dynamic country – out of the business of causing problems."[4]

Bush, who served as governor of Florida from 1999 to 2007, is the son of former President George H.W. Bush and the brother of former President George W. Bush. He is the first brother of a president to run for the office since the Kennedy family, Robert in 1968 and Ted in 1980.[4]

Campbell helped Bush manage his schedule and juggle media and event requests. According to Politico, "She is a trusted Bush aide who previously served as communications director at his nonprofit, Foundation for Florida’s Future."[5][2]

Bush ended his run for the White House after faring poorly in the Iowa Caucuses as well as primary elections in New Hampshire and South Carolina.[6] At a gathering of supporters in the Palmetto State on February 20, 2016, he said:

The people of Iowa and New Hampshire and South Carolina have spoken, and I really respect their decision, so tonight I am suspending my campaign.[6][7]
