Kurt R. Bauer is the president and CEO of Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce (WMC), a 501(c)(6) business association. Bauer is also a registered lobbyist in Wisconsin.[1] He succeeded James Haney as WMC president in April 2011.[2]

Career

Bauer began his career in policy in 1993 as a staff writer and webmaster for the Wisconsin Bankers Association before being promoted to head the association's government relations program. Bloomberg News reports, "In this role, Mr. Bauer was responsible for lobbying the Wisconsin Legislature, state agencies and members of the Wisconsin Congressional Delegation, as well as for fundraising for the Association's political action funds."[3] In 2002, Bauer moved to Phoenix, Ariz., and became president and CEO of the Arizona Bankers Association.[4] He then served as the president and CEO of the Wisconsin Bankers Association from 2004 to 2011, later becoming president and CEO of Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce in 2011.

While head of the Wisconsin Bankers Association, Bauer provided written commentary to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) on a number of issues impacting the banking industry.[5][6][7][8][9][10]

After his appointment to WMC, Bauer was characterized by Milwaukee Journal Sentinel writer Karen Rivedal as wanting a "strong advocacy role" for the organization.[11] Since 2011, Bauer has provided testimony before the U.S. House of Representatives Financial Services Committee's Subcommittee on Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit, penned several editorials in Wisconsin newspapers such as the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and The Sun Prairie Star, presented policy statements, and is frequently interviewed in Wisconsin print and electronic media, such as the Wisconsin State Journal and Wisconsin NPR.[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20]
