Kurt Steinhaus
Kurt Steinhaus was the New Mexico Secretary of Education. He assumed office on February 2, 2022. He left office on January 27, 2023.
Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham (D) appointed Steinhaus as the secretary-designate on July 29, 2021, to succeed Ryan Stewart, who resigned on August 20, 2021, due to health issues in his family.[1] The New Mexico Senate confirmed the appointment on February 2, 2022.[2]
Steinhaus retired in January 2023.[3]
The New Mexico Secretary of Education is an appointed state executive position in the New Mexico state government. The secretary serves as head of the state Public Education Department. In that role, the secretary is responsible for overseeing New Mexico's education policy and program development, operational management of the department, and the distribution of educational funding.[4]
The secretary of education position was created in 2003, when the state's voters approved Ballot Question 1.[5]
Biography
Steinhaus was the Los Alamos Public Schools Superintendent from May 2015 to June 2021. He previously served as deputy cabinet secretary of the state Public Education Department and as director of student and education programs at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Steinhaus began his career as a music teacher at Alamogordo Public Schools.[6]
