As a Latina and Asian woman and the only former teacher running for this position, Kyra has dedicated her career to Oakland kids: as an OUSD classroom teacher at Horace Mann Elementary, as Deputy Director of Education -- working to solve four large problems: early childhood education, college access, the digital divide, and the lack of affordable housing for teachers -- and now as the appointed school board member . Kyra has the on-the-ground and systems level experiences that uniquely qualifies her for this role and what's needed at this time. She will fight to make OUSD functional, responsive, and financially stable so all students, families, and educators succeed. East Oakland families deserve transparency and a seat at the table when difficult decisions are made. Our students deserve a champion who listens to them, puts their needs first, and finds new solutions. Kyra is that leader.

  • Kyra's most important priority is STUDENTS FIRST: It is time we bring the focus back to what matters most: our students. We as a district have been failing too many of them — especially our Black and brown students — for too long. This is not about assigning blame, but rather assuming collective responsibility because our kids deserve so much better, and it’s time we do right by them and deliver on a quality education for all.
  • LONG-TERM, SUSTAINABLE BUDGET: Until we have a sustainable, thoughtful, balanced budget, we will not be able to adequately serve our students. We need to get our financial house in order, so that our focus is on students and education.
  • TRUST: Many of our challenges stem from an ever-deepening mistrust between parents, staff, educators, and board members. We must bring greater transparency and trust back to the district. We must lift the voices of students, parents, and teachers to bridge the gap between our shared hopes & expectations and the current reality our children face.
Kyra is a passionate advocate for racial, social, and educational equity and dismantling systems of oppression, recognizing how deeply interconnected so many of today's issues are.
