An effort to recall Mayor LC Jones is underway in Martinsville, Virginia. Recall organizers successfully submitted the required 375 valid signatures, sending the petition to Martinsville’s Commonwealth Attorney G. Andrew Hall, who will determine whether grounds for recalling Jones meet the legal standard for referral to the circuit court.[1]

Jones was elected to the city council in 2022.[2]

Recall supporters

The recall effort is organized by Patti Covington. Recall documents state that "a legal review of information paid for by but concealed from taxpayers, including the Sands Anderson investigation and the Brown Edwards forensic audit, contain sufficient evidence of wrongdoing to warrant the immediate removal of L.C. Jones."[3]

In the case of a successful recall petition, Virginia does not hold recall elections. Instead, the petition is sent to the circuit court for trial. Virginia allows the following grounds for recall: neglect of duty, misuse of office, or incompetence in the performance of duties when that neglect of duty, misuse of office, or incompetence in the performance of duties has a material adverse effect upon the conduct of the office.[4] The petition for recall must be signed by at least 10% of the number of people who voted in the last election for the office. The state does not have a time limit for circulating petitions.[5]
