I'm Lane Ramona Santa Cruz (they/she), a second-generation Tucsonense, in S-cuk-Son the ancestral lands of the Tohono O'odham and home to the Pascua Yaqui Tribe. My Indigenous lineage is from Eudeve-Opata pueblos in Sonora, Tarahumara from Chihuahua and being born and raised on this side of the border, I identify as Chicanx/Indigena. In 2019, Tucson voters elected me to serve on the City Council representing Ward 1, an area that encompasses a rich tapestry of Latinx/Chicanx/Mexican, Native, and Black neighborhoods. My first term in office has focused on implementing racial and economic equity in City governance, re-investing in the City's youth employment and add recreation programs, implementing permanent affordable housing strategies into the City's planning, improving walking and biking connectivity in the south and westside, implementing fare-free transit during the pandemic and pushing for its permanence, supporting the creation of small business navigators within our Office of Economic Initiatives and Ward 1 business roundtables to support the challenges that our legacy and small business owners face, and broadening the public perception of public safety to include the right to housing, mental health, mobility, jobs, and a good quality of life.
  • Housing: Ward 1 is home to historic barrios, homes and culturally significant landmarks. It is also home to working families and seniors with fixed incomes who are struggling to pay rising rents and costs of living. In ward 1 and City-wide, I remain committed to supporting policies and investments for multi-generational housing for our diverse families. We will continue to work with neighborhoods to establish or update neighborhood plans that can help guide affordable housing, small business and responsible development.
  • Transportation & Mobility: My top priorities for transportation are to expand mobility options and accessibility this includes people walking, mobility devices, bikes, and public transit.. My effort to make transit fare-free is a first step in making public transportation truly accessible. Our next effort is to reimagine our transit route system and frequency to make it more reliable and a viable option to replace car trips. Neighbors and businesses are often concerned about speeding on neighborhood streets and drag racing on arterials. Speed mitigation mechanisms and safety infrastructure on our roads are needed to make it safer for people of all ages to move around.
  • Workforce Development: I continue to work in the investment of our families through the development and support of small and cooperative businesses. Encouraging and supporting labor unions and negotiations is also critical.
We need representation in elected office that is truly representative of our diverse communities. At my core, I am an educator and a community organizer. I have spent over 15 years working with nonprofits and grassroots community organizations on issues such as sexual/gender violence, food justice, migrant rights, ethnic studies, and mobility justice. I understand the perspective of marginalized individuals who want to feel like they are agents of change in their own lives. I am committed to co-governing with all community members. My goal is to make sure that City policy initiatives are developed from the ground up and driven by and for community members.
