A 30-year resident of the South End, I have served the community as a

  • Member of the Burlington Planning Commission
  • Founding Organizer, Calahan Park Community Garden
  • Member, VT Gov. Howard Dean’s Council of Environmental Advisors
  • Director, Opportunities Credit Union of Vermont
  • VISTA Community Organizer in Burlington’s Old North End
  • Member of Sambatucada! (Burlington-based percussion ensemble)
I currently work as a municipal land use planner in Charlotte. I've also served as a nonprofit senior manager and consultant, and provided direct services to Vermonters with disabilities. I'll bring extensive experience as a citizen advocate at the State House, where I helped advance property tax reform, civil rights and services for individuals with mental illness, and promoted expansion of passenger rail service in Vermont. I know how to build coalitions across the aisle, and will be ready from day one to advance Burlington’s interests throughout state government.

  • Fix Vermont’s broken education funding system, by replacing taxes based on the value of your primary residence with taxes based on ability to pay
  • Reboot Vermont’s landlord-tenant laws; passing ‘Just Cause’ eviction protections
  • Establish paid family medical leave as a right for all working Vermonters
Economic, racial, gender and social justice, expanding ranked choice voting, addressing climate change, affordable housing, democracy reforms (such as the National Popular Vote Compact, moving Election Day to the weekend), paid family medical leave, promoting worker rights thru making it easier to join a union.
Inherit the Wind (play & classic movie), Norma Rae (film), Matewan (film), Gandhi (film)
Integrity, centered on the needs of ordinary folks, a commitment to serve others, humility & respect towards all, listens more than speaks, thoughtful but decisive when it's time to choose, grounded in strong moral values based on caring for the community. Willing to recognize & admit mistakes & re-evaluate one's choices when circumstances warrant.
Patient but relentless in working for social change; a good listener but also articulate; kindness and compassion for others. Unafraid to advocate for unpopular causes. Committed to a fair and just economy, with a focus on what's best for the most people.
Willing to work hard in the committees to understand the issues and find common ground on solutions. A good listener who asks for help as needed, and do the work to build alliances with all who share your agenda. Respect leadership, but don't be afraid to challenge it when they veer off-course in serving the best interests of the community.
I'd like to leave my community a better place than how I found it.
The Vietnam War. It started before I entered school but did not end until I was 16. My dad took me to mass antiwar marches when I was still a child.
A governor should work with legislative leaders to devise a shared agenda for major & must-pass bills at the start of each session, then direct his staff and policy executives to collaborate with committee chairs to ensure that key legislation is developed with an eye towards shaping bills that the legislature will pass and the governor can sign. That is not how the current Vermont governor operates, BTW. He does not collaborate with legislative leadership, and has vetoed more bills than any other Vermont governor. He has maintained a contentious stance toward the Legislature that does not serve the public interest.
Climate change, high cost & low availability of 'missing middle' housing, aging workforce, aging housing stock.
Absolutely. Legislators must have a working knowledge of the other branches & levels of government to understand the impact of their actions on those agencies.
You can't be effective without collaborating closely with your fellow committee members and chairs. You won't get much done if you're not willing to sit down and share a meal with elected members of other parties.
Brian Cina & Selena Colburn, progressives from Burlington, VT; US Representative Becca Balint
H. 289, the Wealth Tax bill from the 2024 session.
Human Services, Ways & Means
Government officials have a responsibility to be completely transparent in their use of public funds. Candidates for public office must disclose all donors upon request. Legislative votes should be on the record & publicly disclosed, as should all campaign donations and personal gifts to elected leaders from businesses, trade groups and PACs.
Good, although this can be a fraught process without guardrails that prohibit spending PAC funds on such campaigns.
