Larry S. Hicks (Wyoming)
Larry S. Hicks (Republican Party) is a member of the Wyoming State Senate, representing District 11. He assumed office in 2011. His current term ends on January 4, 2027.
Hicks earned a bachelor's degree in crop science from the University of Wyoming, a master's degree in agronomy from Montana State University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Wyoming in agronomy.[1] Hicks worked as a natural resources coordinator for the Little Snake River Conservation District, and ran a ranch with his wife raising fox trotter horses.[2][3]
Hicks was first elected to the Wyoming Senate in 2010. He was the Senate Majority Floor Leader in 2023 and 2024 and the Senate Vice President in 2021 and 2022.[4] Throughout his time in the state Senate, Hicks served stints chairing the Senate Agriculture Committee, Select Water Committee on Capital Financing and Investments, and the Select Natural Resource Funding Committee.[3]
In September 2024, Hicks announced his candidacy for Wyoming Senate President as part of a slate with state Sen. Brian Boner (R) for majority floor leader and state Sen. Cheri Steinmetz (R) for vice president. Hicks said, "I want to restore normalcy to the Senate while trying to move forward a conservative agenda for Wyoming."[3] WyoFile's Maggie Mullen wrote, "Hicks, Boner and Steinmetz pointed to several top priorities, including 'a fiscally conservative budget,' property taxes, K-12 education, school choice, second amendment rights and 'protections for the unborn.'"[5]
In November 2024, Hicks' leadership slate lost 20-9 to that of state Sens. Bo Biteman (R) for senate president, Tara Nethercott (R) for majority floor leader, and Tim Salazar (R) for vice president.[6]
Biography
Hicks studied crop science at the University of Wyoming, earning a bachelor of science, and went on to earn an M.S. in Agronomy from Montana State University. He later returned to the University of Wyoming where he completed Ph.D. coursework in Agronomy.
Hicks worked as a natural resources coordinator for the Little Snake River Conservation District.[7]

Elections for the Wyoming State Senate took place in 2014. A primary election took place on August 19, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was May 30, 2014. Incumbent Larry S. Hicks ran unopposed in the Republican primary.[8] There were no candidates in the Democratic primary, however, Linda Fleming was offered the party's nomination after a successful bid as a write-in candidate.[9] Hicks defeated Fleming in the general election.[10][11]

Hicks defeated incumbent Democrat James E. Elliott, Jr. for the open seat in the November 2, 2010, general election. He defeated Republicans Sue Hewitt and Blake Waldrop in the August 17 primary election. [12][13]
