Elections for the Alabama State Senate took place in 2014. A primary election took place on June 3, 2014; a runoff election took place where necessary on July 15, 2014. The general election was held on November 4, 2014. The signature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was February 7, 2014. Incumbent Roger Bedford, Jr. was unopposed in the Democratic primary. Jerry Mays was unopposed in the Republican primary. Larry Stutts (R) was selected to replace Mays on March 20, 2014.[2][3][4][5][6] Larry Stutts then faced Roger Bedford, Jr. in the general election on November 4, 2014. According to unofficial results, Stutts defeated Bedford by 60 votes; although Bedford conceded the election, the result was close enough to trigger a recount.[7][8] The certified general election results declared Stutts the winner over Bedford.[9]

Stutts' website highlighted the following campaign themes:[10]

Jobs

  • Excerpt: "Citizens of District 6 want government policies that make it easier to create jobs. Once new opportunities are available, Larry believes in letting the free enterprise system work—getting the government off the backs of the business owners."

Education

  • Excerpt: "As a product of public education with two doctorate level degrees, Larry is devoted to improving the education system. He is for equipping teachers and schools with the right tools to help reach the needs of their students."

Healthcare

  • Excerpt: "As a healthcare provider for the people of District 6 since 1992, Larry is focused on finding ways to make healthcare more affordable and efficient while maintaining the highest quality of care possible."

Veterans and Active Military

  • Excerpt: "Larry will support veterans and those active in the service in Montgomery by ensuring they receive the benefits they need and are promised while demanding accountability and efficiency that will ensure a bright future."

Second and Fourth Amendments

  • Excerpt: "Larry does not support any proposed gun control laws that would limit the rights of gun ownership for responsible and law-abiding citizens. As a believer in the American Bill of Rights and a gun owner, he believes it is critical for Alabamians to recognize the importance of the Fourth Amendment’s statement that we are free from unreasonable and warrantless searches."

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Alabama

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
