My name is Latchmi Devi Gopal and I am running for City Council to represent District 15. I grew up in The Bronx, and am a first generation Guyanese-American. I often say that The Bronx raised both me and my parents, who came to America in their late twenties. I am running for City Council in The Bronx because many of the systemic issues that our community endures are due directly to lack of budgetary investments. We are in the midst of an extremely difficult time, for The Bronx especially, but we are also in the midst of a major cultural reckoning that has engagement levels at an all-time high. Budget justice is on the horizon, if we are equipped to fight for it. I have devoted my life to advocating for economic justice, from my work with DEMOS studying the minimum wage and economic inequality, to my position as Director of Communications and Strategic Partnerships at Unemployed Workers United, (UWU). I currently work as Distributed Organizer and Training Lead with The Frontline, a new campaign from Movement for Black Lives & the Working Families Party. Before that I worked as National Distributed Organizer for the Bernie 2020 Presidential Campaign and as a lead organizer with Riders Alliance fighting for transit justice. And perhaps most importantly, I grew up in the Bronx, and am a first generation Guyanese-American. Making real change requires sustained organizing and dedicated movement building, and I'm ready to get to work. Learn more: https://gopalforthebronx.org
  • My first priority if elected would be to pass the New York Health Act. The issue of universal healthcare has mobilized people all across the country, and we can take action on this in New York by passing the New York Health Act and insuring everyone in our state.
  • Everyone deserves to live in a stable and healthy home. Unfortunately, New York City’s affordability crisis keeps low income New Yorkers at constant risk of displacement. If elected, I’ll continue to fight for truly affordable housing by shifting the balance toward more ownership, empowering tenants and saving NYCHA.
  • We deserve more! We deserve more from our government, we deserve more from our leaders, we deserve more joy and health and safety than we’ve ever imagined.
My top three issues if elected are Affordable Housing, Equitable Economic Development, and Healthcare For All. I have devoted my life to fighting for economic justice, from my work with DEMOS, to my current position leading volunteer training and engagement with The Frontline, a movement formed by The Working Families Party, Movement for Black lives, and United we Dream. Women, undocumented people, and communities of color pay the price in our current system and making sure every person is able to be housed, have their needs met and have healthcare, is what motivates me everyday. Especially in District 15, where so many live uninsured, under-resourced, and without housing. As a private citizen I've worked to address these problems, through serving on the associate board of WHEDco, fighting for transit justice, and working on mutual aid efforts. But I feel clear that real change is not going to be made unless legislative action is taken. I am eager to invest in community land trusts, expand public benefits regardless of immigration status, pass the Small Business Jobs Survival Act, and pass the New York Health Act, amongst many other legislative goals.
I am running for this position because I think that my background as a community organizer makes me uniquely suited to the challenges our district faces. We need long term, sustained investment. We also need to engage the community leaders in our borough who have been fighting for our residents for years. Elected officials exist to serve those who they represent, and if I elected I would work to engage community in every decision possible. Organizers are always working to build relationships, coalitions, an create meaningful, concrete change. We need a leadership who is going to be in the streets building relationships, even when it isn't campaign season. We also need a leader who is going to take the time to empower residents in the decision making process, so that the policy we create is a direct reflection of the needs of the community.
