Campaign themes

2016

Darnell's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Honoring Our Veterans: As a member of a military family that retired from Fort Sam Army Base, LaTronda understands the sacrifice of our soldiers and their families. It is our sacred duty to our Veterans to protect the benefits that are due them.

Fighting for Small Businesses / Minority Owned Business: Worked with constituents to help get the Historically Underutilized Business (HUB) distinction so more small business get contracts

Defending Our Senior Citizens: Worked with churches and community organizations to connect seniors with community feeding sites where they can get a good meal and fellowship

Fighting Extreme Anti-Immigrant Legislation: Defeated Senate Bill 185 which would have encouraged racial profiling by law enforcement.

Standing Up for Our Youth: Defeated Senate Bill 1819 and saved the Texas Dream Act, supporting in-state tuition rates for “Dreamers”, immigrant students who graduate from Texas schools from paying out of state tuition rates.[1]

A special election for the position of Texas House of Representatives District 120 was called for May 7. A special runoff election was held on August 2.[7] The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was March 7.[8]

The seat was vacant following Ruth Jones McClendon's (D) resignation on January 31, 2016.[9]

Latronda Darnell (D), Chris Dawkins (D), Lou Miller (D), and Laura Thompson (I) ran in the special election. Since no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two vote-getters, Thompson and Miller, faced off in a special runoff election, which Thompson won.[10][11][12]
