I am a Florida native. K-12 public schools, bussed for integration. I graduated from the US Naval Academy in aerospace engineering, played Div 1 volleyball and attended the US Army Airborne school. I served for six years as a Navy Surface Warfare Officer, one of first 2 women on a combatant ship, launched Tomahawks in ’98, humanitarian work in East Timor ‘00, our Marines in Kandahar in ‘01. I lost classmates on 9/11 and in Enduring Freedom. I take the role of government very seriously and I have served our community in some fashion ever since returning home.
I am a licensed general contractor, MBA in Finance, and built many buildings with many people including the Southwest Airlines terminal at TPA and The James Museum for Tom & Mary James in St Petersburg. Both the military and construction allowed me to see what is possible when you name your mission, set standards for excellence and lead people to achieve excellence.
I am married with 2 young children and 2 grown children. Our young children re-introduced me to public education in Florida, brought me face-to-face with the fact that we must do better, we must lead better. I got involved in 2015 and haven't looked back.- I believe that public schools are the common fabric that bind us as Americans. I believe that the quality of public education impacts our national security, economic prosperity and community vitality and that the health of our nation is a reflection of the health of our schools. In short, I believe that we can be and we must be excellent at education for every child and that a child should not have to win a lottery or attend a private school to receive an excellent education. To thrive into the future, we must provide excellence and opportunity to every child.
- The number one impact on student outcomes is their teacher. Yes, school leaders and staff are also a vital impact to students, especially those staff working one-on-one with students or in small groups. When our teachers, leaders and staff thrive, our children thrive. Professional pay and benefits is one component and an important component as well as professional development opportunities and school leadership that sets the climate and culture.
- For 100% student success, what I hear from families and the community, we have to have both academic excellence and relevant workforce opportunities for tangible job skills. Safe schools with positive climate and culture, and proactive behavior plans are a must, a baseline from which the learning thrives. I am very proud of the last 4 years on the Pinellas school board; we have achieved great growth in both academic excellence and career skills for our students while also achieving the must baseline of safe schools. positive climate and culture and proactive behavior plans.
