Flood Mitigation I will focus on flood mitigation efforts to protect life and property during flooding events to reduce the burden on FEMA when a natural disaster does occur. Education for Our Future Public education is critical to the future of Americans. Our children and grandchildren rely on the public education system regardless of our income, sex, religion, race, or socioeconomic issues. Despite the role of education in shaping our youth and our future, it is so often neglected at the federal level. Everyone wants their children to go to college, but the truth is that path isn’t for everyone. Plenty of students want to engage in hands-on careers such as welding, plumbing, agriculture, cosmetology, and even the military. High school students should have the option of graduating with trade certifications they can use to enter the workforce and begin their careers. Even in today’s technological world, our young adults should still have access to varied career and technical education options. Not only do we need to make sure we have well-paid, quality educators, but we need well-crafted, quality education that includes higher education opportunities available to all students without crippling graduates with staggering student loan debt. Health Care Issues Health care is a right and every American should have access to quality, affordable health care. With prescription drug prices out of control and women’s health and reproductive rights challenged, Americans fight every day with the real problems in our current health care system. Americans face long waiting times for insurance companies to approve referrals and tests already authorized by their physician. Some Americans self-medicate to make a 30-day prescription last for 60-days because they can’t afford the monthly costs, further complicating their medical care. In rural areas of District 8, hospitals and facilities have closed, causing barriers to patient access to health care. Making health care accessible means a health care system that is available and affordable to everyone. We need increased funding for community health centers with comprehensive care for medical, dental, and mental health issues. Our Jobs and Taxes When the incumbent brags about “super-charged economic growth, expanded job creation, and rising wages for hard-working American families,” the citizens of District 8 are not realizing these alleged improvements in the economy in their own pocketbooks or savings accounts. The recent Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was billed as an overhaul of the tax code intended to simplify filing, reduce tax rates, and reduce withholdings so employees can increase their tax-home pay. However, as a business owner, it’s still difficult to maneuver through the current tax laws without the help of an excellent accountant. Our tax laws need to be simplified, fair, and equitable, as I will fight for Fair Taxation for Texans and all Americans. I will focus on strengthening industries in smaller towns and creating industry in towns that have none. Industry brings economic growth and new jobs. But, to attract industry, all rural areas should have access to adequate, affordable broadband service and the infrastructure to support economic growth. I will bring together resources to improve the infrastructure to meet the needs of industry. Additional Issues Facing District 8 Ever notice that members of Congress are often re-elected as career politicians? How about the fact the longer a member of Congress stays in office, the more special interest legislation gets drafted and considered? I believe that no elected official should be in office for more than 5 terms. Term limits will help break up the stagnation in Congress and allow an opportunity for fresh ideas and younger representatives to have a voice at the table. District 8 has a diverse landscape, economic needs, and people, which means there are a variety of issues which can be overlooked as Congress tackles proposed legislation. The point is to have a representative that votes in the best interests of District 8 and brings District 8 issues to forefront. “I welcome conversations about what is important to you. When I am elected, I will be a representative for all of the people of District 8, and I will listen to you.”[3] |
