An effort in Columbia, Missouri, to recall City Councilmember Laura Nauser from her position was launched in February 2016. Recall organizers submitted petitions with 416 signatures to the city clerk on April 11, 2016.[1][2] The initial petition failed to meet the minimum threshold for valid signatures and organizers ended their efforts on May 2, 2016.[3][4]
Recall supporters
Taylor Burks and Josh Kayser formed the Columbians for Responsible Government PAC to support candidates in the April 2016 election. The group also pursued a recall against Nauser with the goal of placing the recall on the August 2016 ballot.[1] The group's website gave the following reasons for the recall effort:
| “ |
As the council member for Ward 5, Councilwoman Nauser has misrepresented her constituents’ interests by reopening consideration of the Power Transmission Line. Her irresponsible actions show a lack of fiscal stewardship of City resources, and requires us to take these steps and correct her mismanagement. [5] |

Nauser was part of the council majority that voted for reconsideration of a previously approved transmission line route on January 19, 2016. The vote was taken after concerns about the line were expressed by attendees at a November 2015 public hearing.[7]

Recall supporters had to gather at least 408 valid signatures from District 5 voters to force an election. This total equals 30 percent of the total votes cast in the 2014 election for the seat.[1]
On April 5, 2016, The Columbia Daily Tribune reported that organizers ran the risk of running out of time for removing Nauser by recall election due to the city's charter. The charter prevents recall elections for city officials in the last six months of their terms. This requirement meant that supporters needed to get a recall on the August 2016 ballot. The Columbia City Council must read a special election bill in regular session twice before voting. Council members would have needed to complete their work by late May 2016 for a recall to reach the ballot in August 2016. The recall effort ended in May 2016 because supporters were unable to garner enough valid signatures.[8]
