Not added to the 2014 primary ballot
Levey filed to run for District 113 of the Florida House of Representatives in 2014. The Miami Herald reported that her opponent in the race, David Richardson (D), said that Levey was not added to the primary ballot after the check for her filing fee was not cleared by the bank. Richardson said, "I just got a call from the Florida Dept. of Elections and was notified that my Republican opponent's check covering the election filing fee has 'bounced.' She has been disqualified and as of today I AM THE OFFICIAL UNCHALLENGED WINNER in my re-election to the Florida House of Representatives District 113."[1]
Levey's husband, Lewis Levey, disputed the claim that the check bounced. He said, "My wife has never bounced a check in her life and she's a millionaire. The bank put a hold on the two grand that was in the account. Nobody told us."[1] Laura Levey filed a lawsuit in an attempt to get on the ballot on the grounds that her bank was responsible for the check not clearing. Her lawsuit included a letter from a SunTrust bank executive, who wrote, "As this error was due to no fault of our client, we respectfully request that you allow our client to reinstate her candidacy, waive any fees and remove any delinquent reporting that may have occurred as a result of the returned item." The lawsuit also argued that the state election officials were responsible for notifying her if the check did not clear, which they did not do. Leon County Judge Charles Francis ruled against Levey, saying nothing could be done because state law says the filing fee had to be paid before the qualifying period ends.[5][6]
