I am Lawanna Owens-Twaites, Ed.D. a committed public servant, community advocate, and proven leader dedicated to making Union City a better place for every resident. I bring not only years of professional experience in education and leadership but also a heart for service and a deep connection to the people I serve.

With a reputation for being Ready, Responsive, and Resilient, I have championed initiatives that strengthen our neighborhoods, support local businesses, and ensure transparency and accountability in city government. I believe in collaboration, smart growth, and putting people over politics.

My mission is clear: to be a voice for the people, a defender of our community’s values, and a builder of a future that includes everyone.

This election isn’t just about me—it’s about us, and the future we’re building together.

  • I lead with integrity, transparency and a deep commitment to the people of Union City. I don't just listen, I act. My decisions are guided by the needs of our community, not outside interests. You deserve leadership that's present, prepared and always working on your behalf.
  • Every decision I make is rooted in one simple principle: people come first. Whether its advocating for smarter development, better services or safer neighborhoods, I fight for what matters to you. Your voice is at the center of every policy and every plan.
  • I'm committed to expanding opportunities so every resident can thrive. I am focused on supporting small businesses, investing in youth initiatives and enhancing the lives of our seniors. Together, we will open doors and build pathways to a brighter future for all Union City residents.

As an educator, I am of the adage that in all roles - a desire to learn and serve, are the most important attributes.

I looked up to my parents. They both lived lives of integrity with an understanding that they answered to a higher authority.

I am a good listener, highly organized, a futuristic visionary and a collaborative team member.

I want to be known has someone who considered the lives of others. I also want to be known as someone who inspired others to expand their horizons.

Integrity is the foundation of all that I do. Voters want leaders who are honest, ethical and consistent. This is how I have led.

Core responsibilities are responsiveness, vision, and collaboration. You must be willing to listen to constituents and act on their concerns. Great leaders return calls, attend community meetings, and stay connected with the people they serve. In addition, you have to be a visionary. Seeing beyond today and planning for tomorrow. Finally, collaboration and the willingness to work well with others - even across differences.

Community Development & Smart Growth I am passionate about building vibrant, inclusive neighborhoods—ensuring that development respects the character of Union City, while also creating opportunities for residents and businesses. Economic Empowerment & Local Jobs I advocate for small business growth, workforce development, and policies that keep money circulating within Union City. Jobs, contracts, and opportunities should reflect the diversity and inclusivity of the community. Good Governance & Civic Engagement I believe government should work for the people—with open communication, responsive leadership, and more residents engaged in the democratic process.

Financial transparency and government accountability are crucial for a healthy democracy. These components of integrity increase public trust.

Local leadership has a direct impact on the community. We work to create and update city law, ordinances and regulations. We are also responsible for approving the city's budget. In addition, we represent the interests and concerns of our constituents.

My first non paid job was as a tutor.

I am an avid reader... However, I really enjoy the bible. I always learn something new and get direction as to how I can apply character changes.

Unfortunately, I don't have one.
