Candidate Connection

Lawrence Cohen participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 9, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Lawrence Cohen's responses follow below.[3]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Balanced Budget

2) Immigration
3) Economic Growth/Jobs[4][5]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Taxes and the economy. As a tax attorney, I am interested in simplifying the tax code and removing many loopholes created by special interests. Taxes, being the source of revenue for the government, determine what is available to spend and help drive economic growth which benefits all Americans.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[5]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Lawrence Cohen answered the following:

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Honesty, integrity and the ability to listen as well as talk. I believe too many elected officials today will say anything to get elected and like to hear themselves talk when sometimes, it is more important to listen. Listen to constituents, party leadership, and even members of the other party.[5]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
The most important responsibility is to represent the voters in your district, your state and the country. With the increased spending by PACs and Super PACs, especially in this race, that has become increasingly difficult as they all expect something in return for their support. That is why I have not accepted any assistance form PACs. If elected I will have one responsibility, to represent the voters of Ohio's 12th Congressional District.[5]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
I know it is going to sound silly but, my favorite thing in my home is my family. TVs, artwork, golf clubs, musical instruments can all be replaced. The only thing that is not replaceable is my family.[5]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Probably one of the Ohio State school songs. While an undergraduate at Ohio State I was in the Marching Band and dotted the i in Script Ohio. I have played with the OSU Alumni Band since graduating from college in 1990 and those are the songs that end up in my head the most. So whether Buckeye Battle Cry or Hang on Sloopy it is usually the sousaphone part.[5]
What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?
The diversity of having 435 members each representing approximately the same number of US citizens but recognizing the diversity of our country in all respects from race and religion to economics and political party.[5]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?
I do not think it is necessary. The most important thing is to be committed to representing the residents of the district to the best of your ability without letting the outside influences of PACs and party leadership influence your decision on what is best for your constituents. In that sense I think being a career politician with debts to donors is a detriment.[5]
Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?
The problem with two year terms in today's society is that you end up spending almost the entire second year trying to get reelected and not doing the job you were elected to do. I would rather see the election process changed than the term length.[5]
