The mayor and nine seats on the Tulsa City Council were up for election in 2016. The filing deadline was April 13, 2016, and there was a primary election on June 28, 2016. A candidate was able to win a seat outright in the primary by winning 50 percent or more of the vote. A general election was held on November 8, 2016, for races with two candidates or races where no candidates received 50 percent of the primary vote. G. T. Bynum defeated incumbent Dewey Bartlett Jr., Tom McCay, Lawrence Kirkpatrick, and Paul Tay in the Tulsa mayoral primary election.[1]
