Lawrence L. Koontz, Jr. was a justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia. Justice Koontz was elected to the Supreme Court by the General Assembly in 1995. Justice Koontz reached the mandatory age of retirement in February 2011, the year he turned 70.[1][2]
Education
Koontz attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where he received a B.S. in Biology. He received his law degree from University of Richmond School of Law.[3]
Career
Koontz has served at every level of the state courts in Virginia. For one year, he was Assistant Commonwealth Attorney, starting in 1967. In 1968, he became a judge on the Roanoke Juvenile Court. He served in this capacity until 1976, when he joined the 23rd Circuit Court. Nine years later, he joined the Virginia Court of Appeals, where he served until 1995. That year, Koontz was elected to the Virginia Supreme Court.[3]
