Lawrence Leavitt
Lawrence R. Leavitt is a former federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the District of Nevada. He served in that position from 1987 to October 2011.[1] He retired from the court on October 7, 2011.[2] Las Vegas attorney Vincent Ferenbach has been selected to replace Leavitt as U.S. magistrate judge.[3]
Biography and Education
Judge Leavitt was born in Chicago, Illinois. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana in 1959 and his master's degree in philosophy from the University of California at Berkeley. In 1969, he received his J.D. degree from the University of California Boalt Hall School of Law.[1]
Career
Judge Leavitt began his career as a private practice lawyer. After one year, he joined the Clark County District Attorney’s Office, where he worked as a deputy district attorney and later a chief deputy district attorney. He then became the Chief Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Nevada in 1978. Three and a half years later, he began working as an attorney for the Justice Department’s Organized Crime and Racketeering Strike Force in Las Vegas. In 1987, he became a magistrate judge.[1]
