I was raised by a single mother in the city of Wayne and have lived most of my life in Wayne and Westland. The majority of my family also lives right next door in Canton, where I spent so much time growing up. I've spent nearly a decade as a public health advocate and community organizer, and I am invested in fighting for a more just and equitable world for all of us. My passion for people and commitment to public health started at home many years ago, where I witnessed several environmentally hazardous explosions, attempts to dump toxic waste, and pollution that has made our rivers and wetlands uninhabitable for native species. My hometown of Wayne serves as a prime example of environmental injustice, and it is no surprise to me that we rank in the highest percentiles for asthma, heart disease, and low life expectancy across the state of Michigan. This community has shaped me into someone who has great pride in being part of the working class and who cares deeply about the health and well-being of my neighbors. I know the challenges my working class neighbors are facing, and I know that it shouldn't be this hard. We need someone in our state legislature who will fight for livable wages, affordable and accessible healthcare, and for affordable housing for all. Someone who will fight for human dignity for all of us.
  • Clean air and water: Corporate polluters have been releasing toxic chemicals into the environment for decades without any accountability, and today residents rank in the 90th-95th percentiles for asthma. The city of Wayne alone is in the highest percentiles for asthma, heart disease, and low life expectancy. We cannot continue down a path where corporate polluters go unchecked while the public health deteriorates. If elected I will fight to make sure corporate polluters are held accountable for cleaning up their messes and that we have stronger environmental protection laws on the books to prevent further messes and pollution.
  • Economy: Wages have remained stagnant for decades while the cost of living has increased significantly. Working families are struggling to pay the bills and put food on the table. If elected I will work to increase the minimum wage to at least $15 an hour and create a standard that increases the minimum wage with inflation on an annual basis. I will also fight to hold corporations accountable for paying their workers a fair wage and prevent them from implementing the union-busting tactics we see happening across the country. Michigan workers deserve dignity and should not be exploited by corporations for their labor. They have a right to earn an honest wage that affords them quality housing, utilities, food, and healthcare.
  • DTE accountability: I am running a fully grassroots campaign and will not take a dime of corporate money, including from DTE. Michigan ranks 46th in electricity reliability because DTE fails to invest in our power grid. Instead of replacing transformers, trimming trees, and burying power lines, DTE rewards their Wall Street shareholders with the money we pay to keep our lights on. Last year we sat in the dark throwing away hundreds of dollars in groceries while DTE raised our rates and raked in over $1 billion. I will fight to pass legislation that forces DTE to pay customers for every hour they are without power, work to pass laws that prohibit utilities from donating money to politicians and PACs, and advocate for publicly owned power.
Healthcare: As a public health professional who worked on Medicare policy for several years, I am a strong proponent of a single payer healthcare system. This is the best option to lower costs in our healthcare system and guarantee this basic human right for all. A person’s ability to access healthcare should not be dependent on their employment status. Further, somebody who works full-time and pays the premiums for their employer-sponsored health plan should not have to fear bankruptcy because they got sick and sought treatment. Regardless of socioeconomic status, we all have a right to quality, affordable healthcare. I will work tirelessly to change minds in Lansing and establish a single payer healthcare system in Michigan.
