Passionate urbanist who cares about Lansing, experienced working in municipal government, values transparency and inclusion.
  • Restructuring of City Council. We need to restore balance between the mayor and city council by making it easier to override a mayoral veto. We should also increase ward seats in order to ensure representation from all communities in Lansing.
  • Restrict mayoral power. Make a city council override of a mayoral veto more feasible. Additionally, change the system of appointing department heads. I think these jobs should be treated like any other job: a job description developed and posted publicly for several weeks and qualified candidates interviewed by a hiring committee. Currently, the mayor can nominate anyone for a department head position, regardless of their qualifications. Opening up this process can ensure that we have the best people from the region in those roles.
  • Boards and commissions. We should take a critical look at all of the city's various boards and commissions, how many people serve on them, how long they serve, and how they are appointed.
Not something the charter can directly impact, but I am personally passionate about walkability in our city. Like many cities, Lansing is currently in a position to un-do some of the car-centric urban planning that occurred for decades.
Keeping the people of Lansing top of mind when drafting revisions to the charter. As commissioners, we will need to listen to the community. The current charter was drafted in 1978. In cast the new charter also lasts for decades, we need to make sure it is written with the future of Lansing in mind.
I was in eighth grade when newspapers printed that Al Gore won the 2000 presidential election. Like the rest of America, I then learned about hanging chads.
Anything by Jane Jacobs. I am fascinated by the dynamic of cities.
I don't think previous experience in politics is necessary, but I do think having experience working in municipal government is helpful. I worked for the City of Lansing for five years, and saw firsthand how some elements of the charter worked, and how many elements of the charter were obstacles to progress.
I am a member of the Lansing Community Alliance, a group of charter commission candidates focused on putting the people of Lansing first when writing a charter.

Lansing City Pulse has endorsed my campaign.
I value a transparent and inclusive city government for Lansing.
