Three of the seven seats on the Leander Independent School District school board were up for general election on November 8, 2016. In the race for Place 3, incumbent Pam Waggoner defeated challenger Chris Remy. Incumbent Grace Barber-Jordan defeated challenger Scott Rowe in Place 4. In Place 5, Russell Bundy lost to James MacKay in the race for an open seat.[1]

Voter and candidate information
The Leander Independent School District Board of Trustees consists of seven at-large members elected to three-year terms. The filing period for Texas school board candidates running in fall elections started on July 23, 2016. The final day for candidates to file their applications for ballot placement was August 22, 2016. A candidate for school board in Texas must be a citizen of the United States and a resident of the school district. The application for ballot placement also states that candidates cannot have felony convictions or court judgments verifying total mental incapacity on their records.[2]
The deadline to register to vote for the November election was October 11, 2016. The early voting period started on October 24, 2016, and concluded on November 4, 2016.[3]

About the district
Leander Independent School District is located in central Texas in Williamson and Travis counties. The Williamson County seat is Georgetown and the Travis County seat is Austin. The counties were home to an estimated 528,718 and 1,199,323 residents in 2016, according to the United States Census Bureau.[6]
Demographics
Williamson and Travis counties overperformed in comparison to the rest of Texas in terms of higher education achievement from 2011 to 2015. The United States Census Bureau found that 39.3 percent of Williamson County residents and 46.0 percent of Travis County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 27.6 percent of state residents. The median household income in Williamson County was $73,750 and the median household income in Travis County was $61,451, while it was $53,207 for Texas. The county poverty rate was 6.6 percent in Williamson County and 13.2 percent in Travis County, compared to the state's 15.6 percent.[6]
