Campaign themes

Zellers' 2017 campaign website highlighted the following issues:[9]

DEVELOPMENT

We need developments where neighbors, business people, and developers work to make sure that the right development occurs in the right place, that the buildings add to the character of the neighborhood, that additional residential and business opportunities are created on the isthmus, and that important historic resources are preserved. (More)

NEIGHBORHOOD CHARACTER and QUALITY OF LIFE

I have worked with neighbors and city officials to maintain and protect the uniqueness of our neighborhood while also supporting changes that build on our strengths. (More)

LOCAL BUSINESSES

I support the growth and development of local businesses. Neighborhood businesses enable us to live more efficiently and sustainably. During the reconstruction of Johnson Street in 2014, I worked with the neighborhood, the city and the businesses along this street to provide support during that challenging time. (More)

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, EMPLOYMENT PRACTICES AND THE CITY BUDGET

Financial stability and wise budgeting are essential to the city’s overall health. As Mayor Soglin observed in talking about city budgeting: 'Madison can perform as an outstanding community … only if our city government is stable.' (More)

TRANSPORTATION

Transportation and development go hand in glove. Public investment in transportation infrastructure is a catalyst for new development. You can’t build the density first and hope that transit will follow. The City needs to commit to the development of a comprehensive multi-modal Isthmus Area Transportation Plan and Parking Strategy. (More)

LISTEN TO AND REPRESENT DISTRICT 2 RESIDENTS

The role of an alder is to represent the residents of the district. Foremost this requires being a good listener. An engaged and respectful dialogue is crucial to a reasonable consideration of all of the items that come before the City. (More)

WATER and AIR QUALITY

The quality of our water and air are crucial to our city. Aquifer contamination, water filtration needs, disinfection byproducts, groundwater recharge, and shoreline protection are areas of increasing concern in our developing urban environment.Poor air quality contributes to increased rates of cancer, heart disease, lung disease and asthma. (More)

HOMELESSNESS

Throughout Madison and the surrounding communities there are people who for a wide variety of reasons do not have a safe, clean warm place to call home. Homelessness is a multifaceted problem that involves a wide range of situations. It is more than simply setting up a warming shelter. At the same time we need to distinguish between homelessness on a citywide scale and the disruptive and unacceptable behavior of a few. (More)[10]
