Campaign themes

2016

Hyson's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Empower Communities & Create Opportunities

Opportunities should be created in ways that build strong, sustainable, Vibrant economies and promote small businesses. I believe that the natural beauty of the district is one of the greatest assets, but that we are selling ourselves short because there is not a unified approach to tourism in the area. While places like the Outer Banks or the Adirondacks benefit from name recognition, we market individual destinations or describe the region in terms of distance from nearby cities.

Tourism Economy & Rural Transportation

I believe that the natural beauty of the district is one of the greatest assets, but that we are selling ourselves short because there is not a unified approach to tourism in the area. While places like the Outer Banks or the Adirondacks benefit from name recognition, we market individual destinations or describe the region in terms of distance from nearby cities. To connect the region into a wider whole, I would provide a tourism council - I heart Wild Western NY (open to suggestion)- to help the variety of world-class attractions, businesses, institutions, universities, non-profits and the Seneca Nation cooperate in a way that affects the region as a whole. To help, I would prioritize funding interregional public transportation. This would benefit communities and tourism. One example of this would be prioritizing funding for tourism train loops. The infrastructure already exists, and could connect Niagara Falls (Millions of visitors per year) to Jamestown and Corning. In subsequent phases, this could be expanded to include special event and rural transportation.

Energy/Green Infrastructure

I work as a specialized consultant with oil and gas companies, but I do not think shale-gas drilling -“fracking” - is a good solution for our area. The business model used in shale gas drilling maximizes production. This approach does not balance the risk-reward between the public and private, and will disrupt communities with boom-bust cycles instead of sustainable economic growth. As production declines and wells are sold to smaller companies, the likelihood that the public will become responsible for costs and risks associated with old wells will increase. We can come up with better solutions for resilient, sustainable economies and energy supply.

Education

I am an advocate for education, and believe that educational institutions and educators are essential components of a community. I believe that many of the issues communities are faced with are interrelated - whether social, economic or personal - and that education has an important role in adapting to contemporary challenges.

There are several strands to the Common Core issue. I support the idea that there should be standards in place so that students do not suffer if they move from one school to another. However, teachers should not be evaluated primarily in terms of student test results. Test-centric education models are a push to privatize education and sell computers and curricula that will not be beneficial for the public if left untended.

Women's Equality

I am an advocate for a woman’s right to choose for herself what healthcare best suites her. I support equal pay for equal work. I advocate on everyone’s behalf, for affordability and accessibility to the safest, most effective healthcare.[1]
