I am a lifetime resident of Seminole County, and now I privileged to be riasing my own two daughters here. As a cybersecurity expert, I spent 15 years designing training systems for the U.S. military. Now I work with small businesses and teach cybersecurity as an adjunt professor at UCF. I also manage two local non-profits - one that prepares students for careers in STEM and another that helps support our school food pantries.
  • I am former Seminole County Public Schools student and now my two children also attend Seminole County public schools. Unfortunately, our legislators to chip away at public school funding, often while enriching bank accounts of for-profit school owners. Public schools are held to an impossible standard given the funding we provide. We needs to let our educators educate. We need to hold voucher schools accountable for their results, and ensure they can't cherry pick their students, leading to discrimantory policies.
  • From family caregivers to small business owners, we all have a healthcare story - and all too often, a lack of affordable care is a part of those stories. Affordable healthcare is a necessity. I will fight to expand Medicaid, support our caregivers, ensure women have the reproductive health services they need, and make sure all Floridians receive coverage even if they have preexisting conditions.
  • Florida is known for it's weather and natural resources, and people visit from all over the world. As a state that depends on those resources as part of our economy, we must do a better job at protecting them. Legislators have let special interests and corporations write the laws for far too long. We have to reverse that course, and fast. Once a developer or legislator paves over our natural land, it is too late.
I'm passionate about education. For far too long our public schools have underfunded and attacked in an attempt to privatize education. We need legislators that understand that economic innovation comes from education. We chose to have an educated population in this country for that very reason - sadly many believe that the way to get there is to defund our public schools.
Honesty, integrity, humility, empathy, a passion for learning, and the ability to admit to mistakes and take corrective action.
An elected state representative should work with individuals, businesses, and governments in their district to support legislation important to those they represent.
Seminole County has been my home throughout my entire life, and now I'm privileged enough to be raising my two daughters here. But as I watched Seminole County families struggle to make ends meet and saw special interests threaten our natural resources, I knew I needed to do more. I am running to be a state representative so I can give back to a community that has given so much to me throughout my lifetime. At the end of the day, this race isn't about me - it is about what we can accomplish together for our children and generations to come. I want to see a Florida that is proud of the work its government can do for the people - something I've never seen in my lifetime.
Part Time Sales Associate at Radio Shack in the Seminole Town Center Mall for about a year.
I'm not much of a fiction reader, but The Great Gatsby has always been a favorite. The book requires readers to look deeply into the characters - past the superficial social constructs - through allusions and metaphors to understand and empathize with their plight.
"I believe that we will win" -Pitbull
I think it can be helpful to understand the inner-workings of government. However, I also know that experience in government and politics can lead to complacency and a "that's how it's always been done" attitude that is detrimental to citizen representation.
Florida's economy is dependent on tourism and hospitality. Further, 70%+ of our state revenue comes from Sales Taxes. We know that as our climate changes, as we see pandemics, or even if we are victimized by terrorist attacks, tourism to our state suffers - and our budget along with it. This means that our legislature - as it stands - will continue to cut public services (like schools, infrastructure repairs, healthcare, etc) to compensate. This will just exacerbate an already-bad situation if we don't work to diversify our revenues and build new industry.
Not only is relationship building with other legislators beneficial, it is critical. Florida is a large state with a diverse population. What works well for Seminole County, might not be the best thing for other counties. To flourish as a state, we have to be willing to listen, share, and work together to get things done.
I support an independent redistricting commission to help ensure that state and federal redistricting is done fairly and without the influence of political parties or money to the greatest extent possible.
While we don't always agree, I find it inspirational that leaders like Rep. Carlos Guillermo- Smith and Rep. Anna Eskamani aren't afraid to represent and be a persistent voice for their constituents. They have taken the time to understand the issues facing their communities, and they fight for them every day. Whether you agree with them or not, their tenacity is admirable.
